Nottingham Review. 12 June 1840 (p.4b).

" Alarming Illness from eating Collared Gristle "
Considerable excitement was created at about five o'clock in the afternoon of yesterday (Thursday), by the circulation of reports that two families were poisoned, the one living in York-street, and the other in Clarke-square. Upon enquiry, we learnt that the family in York-street consisted of James Peverill, his wife Martha, and their children, Joseph aged 12 years, Henry 8, Hannah 6, Sarah 4 and James 2 years old. From Mrs Peverill we learnt that she sent her son Joseph to buy a pound of 'collared head', at Mr Cooke's, Glasshouse-street, and that she sent 5d. for it, but the boy brought back 2d. saying they had lowered the price. All the family partook of it, and in about two hours they began to be ill, and vomited; her husband returned home about three o'clock, having left the eldest boy sick on the Mansfield-road, and he went for some brandy for the family, who complained of sickness and being very ill; he had no sooner returned, than he also began to be very ill, and the indisposition increased so rapidly, that the whole family (with the exception of Sarah who was out playing) were incapable of giving any alarm. On her return she was sent to a neighbour, who immediately went to the house. This person states that the appearance of the family was quite appalling, for they were vomiting, and some of them were nearly insensible, and perfectly helpless. Assistance was instantly procured, emetics administered, and we are happy to say that the family (the husband excepted, who is a delicate man) were, at nine o'clock last night, considered to be out of danger.
The family in Clarke-street consists of John Campion, his wife and child about two years old. Campion informed us he had about two o'clock today bought at Mr Cook's, half a pound of collared head for which he gave 2 1/2 d.; that soon after his wife had eaten of it, she complained of being ill; and that in about an hour afterwards he felt a heavy load and boiling at his stomach, and thought he should burst, but he soon afterwards began to vomit. His wife continued to get worse and at nine o'clock she was not capable of sitting up. The child was better. In this case emetics had also been administered.
Another family was taken ill on Sunday morning, after having partaken of some collared head, which was also bought at Mr Cook's. The mother told us she thought her child, which is about two years old, would have died. This family recovered without medicine.
It is only an act of justice to Mr Cooke to state, that he assures us they have neither a copper nor brass cooking utensil about the house; and the neighbours speak highly of their cleanliness. Mrs Cooke denies most positively that the 'collared head' or 'collared gristle', which she sold to the Peverill's could have caused their illness and adds " I made about 40 lbs. of 'collared head', the greater part of which I sold yesterday and today, and I have not heard of any other person who bought the article, being ill, than those already named".
Immediately on hearing of the illness of the Peverill's and Campion's, and that it was attributed to eating collared head, bought of Mr Cooke, he sent for Mr Trueman, surgeon, to attend the families.
Mr Cooke has also called upon us, and states that he purchases nothing but meat of the best quality, and denies that he sells anything that he would not eat himself.

Nottingham and Newark Mercury. 12 June 1840 (p.189c).

Yesterday (Thursday): A boy of the name of Peverill residing in York-street, went to the shop of Mr Samuel Cook, Glasshouse-street, to purchase some collared-head; and on being asked whether he would have that at sixpence a pound or threepence, the one being made of pork and the other of gristle, he replied that he would have that at threepence and was accordingly served with it. He took it home with him, and his father, mother and four other children partook of it to their dinner. In about two hours serious illness seized the whole; they began to be sick and vomited considerably. The father, who had gone out, returned home about three o'clock, leaving the eldest boy sick on the Mansfield-road, and went for some brandy; after his return, he also complained of being ill, and so suddenly were they all seized that they were utterly incapable of giving any alarm; only one of the children, the youngest but one was not so, and on her return she was sent for a neighbour, who, on entering the house, found them vomiting most dreadfully, and at the same time quite helpless. Medical assistance was procured, Mr Trueman, surgeon being immediately sent by Mr Cook on his hearing that their illness was attributed to the collared head. Emetics were administered, and by skilful treatment they were, at nine o'clock, declared out of danger, except the father, who being a weak, sickly man, is still dangerously ill.      A family named Campion, living in Clarke-square, were likewise taken with the same symptoms through eating collared head bought at Mr Cook's, but they also recovered through medical attention. On Sunday another family were taken violently ill, having eaten collared head purchased from the same shop but they recovered without medicine. We understand that Mr Cook has not a single copper or brass utensil in his house, so that it could not have been through boiling it; and we are further led to understand that they are very clean people in their business. Mrs Cook denies most positively that the 'collared head' or 'collared gristle' which she sold to the Peverill's could have caused their illness, and adds, " I made about
40 lbs. of collared head, the greater part of which I sold yesterday and today, and I have not heard of any other person who bought the article, being ill, than those already named"
Many urge that it was owing to the people's stomach being so unused to meat that they were taken so ill, and vomited it up. The gristle would no doubt be very rich which could cause the calamity.

Henry left for Australia with his brother James in 1853.

Henry (the third in the family) married in 1872 a Catherina Callanan in St Patricks Cathedral, Melbourne. The family in those days being staunch Wesleyan, I suspect that Henry's marriage in the R.C. Cathedral was sufficient for the family to have nothing further to do with him. Henry died in The Convent of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Northcote in 1897, with Catherina passing away at the same site in 1898.
