The Bacon family of Oklahoma by way of Ark>Tenn. The Bacons were infused by the lines from Pesterfield, Haile/Hale, Acre,Lea,Whiteley,Carter,Gant,Long,Miller, and Smith. The key areas of settlement, were Madison County, Ar., Crawford County,Ar., Washington County, Tn., Blount County, Tn., Bledsoe County, Tn., Baltimore,Md. Major emphasis is directed toward Madison and Crawford County, Ar. during the time period between 1840 to 1899.
Research is currently directed toward Charles Bacon, Born in 1786 in Washington County, Tn. There are a number of lost years and lack of documentation. Key questions I need help with are:1)Documentation that Charles and Hale Bacon are father-son? 2) Documentation of marriage of Charles to Uratha Hale and date? 3)In the Wash. Co. Tn., census of 1830, Charles was listed as the only person in the household. Had Uratha died and were the children were living with a relative? Who were they living with and where were they living? 4)When and where did Charles die? Where is he buried?
It seems that Charles was living in Madison Co. Ar. with his second wife, Martha Patsy Bean, on forty acres received from a land patent received from the Fayetteville Land Office. The last date for any documentation with Charles Bacon was Aug. 1, 1844 when he received his Official Certificate of Ownership on the land patent. I feel that he died near that date. Where is he buried? Does anyone have documentation beyond 1844 that Charles was living? I have searched for his grave for over a year and feel that most likely, he was buried on the farm with a field stone as a marker. I will continue to search when I'm in the area.
I think I have new information on Hale Bacon's wife Catherine Lee. I found in Deedbook B, Vol. 1, page189, a deed that listed all of the full names of Catherine's siblings still living at home when (William Lea) her father died and his estate (farm) was being sold. They were: Thomas Jefferson Lee, William Jasper Lee, Isaac Newton Lee, Malissa Jane Lee, and Nancy Jane Lee. Catherine Bacon and Francis Marion Lee were married adult children who were involved in the selling of the William Lee Estate on Sept. 10, 1847. It also listed her mother's maiden name as being "Whiteley". This information opens the door to an additonal family line that needs to be researched. I have not found anything on her line to date (May 1, 2002) I do feel that based upon the fact that Francis Lea, Isaac Lea, and William Lea all came to Madison Co. together in 1837 and all three were listed on the 1837 Madison County Tax List may indicate some relationship since all three names show up in the U.S.Census of Bledsoe, Co., Tn. in 1830. It seems, based on age documented by the census that Francis was the father and William and Isaac were brothers. It should be noted that all records beginning with the 1830 Tenn. census and continuing on through the land transaction in 1847, William Lea signed his name as Lea and not Lee. The deed transaction in 1847 was the first time the spelling "Lee" was used. Because Both Nancy and Catherine were illiterate and accepted the document as written, the name seemed to change at that point.
I have a question about Catherine Lee's age. Although her birthdate was listed as being 1825,(on her tombstone) she was not listed in the 1830 Bledsoe Co.census in the home of William Lea. She should have been in the 5 year old category if the age based on her tombstone date is true. This leads me to believe that Catherine Lee was much younger than she had always stated. She would have been in the age braket of 14 or 15 when she married. This was not uncommon and she may have started out saying she was older than she really was and just continued through her life. Who knows. In today's world, that would really be different.
Hale Bacon is listed on a number of sites as being buried in Logtown Hill Cemetery in Van Buren, Ar. I checked with the city and their records indicate that he is not buried
