James Harrison Bagby.
( Maw and Grist Miller & Farmer, Stock raiser)

James Bagby energetic, successful & highly respected citizen was left an orphan at age of nine.
His mother Virginia Harrison died in 1838. His father William in 1847. William was a carpenter by trade from Kentucky, who was raised by his brother John Bagby.
Virginia came from the well known Harrison's from Va., by way of Kentucky. Their home was near Roanoke, Randolph,CO., MO. where James H. was born, Sept. 20, 1834.
They had another child, Wm. H. , now a well to do farmer of this county, however after the death of his
mother, James father married Nancy H. Davis, daughter of Samuel C. Davis. They had two other children,
Robert J. & Virginia C. now Mrs. J.H. Mathis of Callao. Virginia married James D. Burton after Wm. died.
James went to work for Wm. R. Ferguson, he was 19 years of age, James showed a preference for
mechanical employment. He was highly skilled and inventive about devising working machinery.
His reputation was well known. At age 19 he was called upon by the Rev. Samuel C. Davis to reconstruct & rebuild the latter's Mill. Young James undertook this difficult & responsible task without hesitation & performed it with such success & so satisfactorily to Mr. Davis that the latter gave him a one third interest in the Mill for his work. Mr. Bagby ran the Mill for a number of years, and subsequently became full owner. Later on he erected a new Mill on the site of the old, which he both operated. This Bagby Mill had both water & steam power, and was one of the best Mills in that part of the county.
James Harrison Bagby bought part of the old Davis homestead. He paid Mr. Davis's note off & then bought the whole place. A fine farm of 276 acres, where he lived & farmed for years.
James ran the Mill plus specialized in stock raising with success. He married Miss Nancy H. Ferguson, daughter of Wm. I. Ferguson, who reared him. James & Nancy had four children, Lou, Orpha, Thomas N.,
and Kate. Members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
