Friday, 4 Apr 1924, Vol 37 No 50--BROKE BOTH ARMS--Mrs. Frank Shipp, aged about
75 years, residing near Huntsville, had the misfortune to break both of her arms in a fall
Monday, being thrown to the ground when her horse started up as she was getting into
her buggy.

Shipp, John

"A house divided against itself cannot stand", We don't know exactly where
to find this quotation, but its as true as Gospel, and the sublime truth of
the thing forces itself upon our mind in a manner which leaves no room for
doubt or uncertainty. We often have practical illustrations of the
truthfulness of this adage. We had one in this vicinity last week, and we
are still further convinced now that the fellow who got up that sentiment
knew what he was about when he wrote it.
John M. Shipp, an old gentleman somewhat past the prime of life, lives about
7 miles south of Huntsville. He has a son named William m. Shipp, besides a
wife and several daughters. The old gentleman, it is said, is not
particularly pleasant and agreeable when he gets excited, and he generally
makes things warm for his family whenever one of these periodical spells
come on him.
On Wednesday, the 12th inst. [12 Nov 1873], he and his son had a difficulty,
and the old gentleman had his son arrested, charging him with assault and
battery, and also asking that he be put under bonds to keep the peace. The
trial came off on Monday last [17 Nov 1873], in 'Squire Bibb's court, before
a jury. The evidence given in was very conflicting & considerably mixed.
The old man claimed that his son attacked him, and used a chair on him in a
manner which was not entirely agreeable to the old man's feelings, one or
two of his daughters corroborating his statement. On the other hand, the
son claims that his father had been abusing his mother and sister, and he
had simply taken the old man by the coat collar to prevent him doing them
violence. This enraged the old man, and he turned upon the son, and went
for him in a way he despised, using an awl, about five inches long, and
trying desperately to punch a hole in his son's anatomy. The son didn't
care about being punched, so he took a chair, and held it out in front of
him, gently pushing the old man away whenever he renewed the attack. He
say's he never struck the old man at all, but simply used the chair as a
guard against the old gentleman's furious onslaughts. His mother, and the
balance of the family who had not sided with the old man, supported his
testimony. The case was then given to the jury, who returned a verdict of
$15 and cost against the son, amounting in the aggregate to $33.90. The
suit to make the son give bonds to keep the peace, has been dismissed.
