HERITAGE - NC, pub 1981, p629, family #935. Mathias Steelman is reported to be

the first Steelman to come to the Yadkin. The first record of him in North

Carolina is a Surry Co. tax list of 1774. He was listed with two polls,

probably himself and his son John. In 1775 he is listed with 3 sons and

himself. At the February, 1775 Court of Pleas and Quarterly Sessions for Surry

Co., he was appointed Overseer of the Road. He was a tobacco farmer both in

Delaware and in North Carolina, leaving Delaware for better land after

depleting the soil from continuous planting of tobacco. D.A.R.:

26 Nov 1747, Kent Co, DE., requested surveys for 250 1/2 acres. 30 Nov 1749,

Kent Co, DE., requested another 147 acres. 1779 deed issued to Matthias

Steelman for 400 acres in Surry Co, NC. on the "waters of Deep Creek". 7 May

1779, 300 acre deed on "Hunting Creek". 15 May 1779, 100 acres bought adjoining

"William Steelman". 1780 100 acres bought on "Buck Eye Branch". DEEDS:

Pennsylvania, and Counties on Delaware BY THE PROPRIETARIES Whereas

Mathias Steelman of the County of Kent hath requested of us that we would be

pleased to grant him a survey on one hundred acres of land between Benjamin's

portion and Hour Glass Marsh in the forest of said county for which he agrees

to pay to our use from the day hereof the yearly quitrent of one penny

sterling, for every acre of the same, and one whole years rent on every

Allienation: These are therefore to authorize and require you to survey or

cause to be surveyed unto the said Mathias Steelman at the place aforesaid

contigous to surveys already made, the said quantity of 100 acres, if not

already surveyed or appropriated, and make return thereof into the secretaries

office, in order for confirmation; for which this shall be sufficient warrant.

Given unto my and with the seal of land office, by virtue of certain powers

from the said Proprietaries, at Philadelphia, this the twenty sixth day of

November 1747 To William Parsons Surveyor General Anthony Palmer


Kent County Delaware Be it remembered that on the fourteenth day of May

seventeen hundred and fifty five came into the court of Common Pleas held at

Dover in and for the County of kent aforesaid John Thomson and did acknowledge

the within deed unto Mathias Steelman and the lands and tenements with the

premises therein mentioned to be his right and properly according to the

purport and effect thereof IN TESTIMONY whereof I have hereunto affixed the

seal of Kent County Aforesaid. August the 6th 1755 John

Kent County on Delaware Be it remembered that Mathias Steelman and wife Ruth

came into the Court of Common Pleas held in and for Kent County upon Delaware

the sixteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred

and seventy and then and there did acknowledge the within deed unto William

Lynch with the lands and premises therein specified to be his right and

property according to the purport and effect thereof and at the time Ruth

Steelman wife of the above named Mathias Steelman being privately and apart

examined on the hearing of her said husband did declare she became a party to

the within deed of her own free will and consent without being inforced there

to by fear, force, threats of her said husband. IN TESTIMONY whereof I have

hereunto affixed the public seal ofKent County. A true copy test

WILL: Ruby Thurston's STEELMAN RELATIVES. p20 & 21. In the name of God, Amen, I

Matthias Steelman, being weak of body but of sound and perfect sence and memory

thanks be to Almighty God for the same do make and ordain this my Last Will and

Testament. First and foremost I recommend my soul into the hand of Almighty God

who gave it me and my body to the earth to be decently buried after the

discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned as for what wordly goods it hath

pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and bequeath as follows My will

and desire is that all my debts and funeral expences be first paid and

discharged. Item I lend to my beloved wife Ruth Steelman two hundred & thirty

acres of land on Turners Creek beginning at a White Oak saplin on the East side

of Buttens branch runs north thirty-five chains to a post Oak thence East to

said Creek thence down the same as it meanders to the mouth of the Green branch

& thence North thirty-five til an east course will go to the beginning. I also

lend to my beloved wife Ruth Steelman all my stock and household furniture

during her widowhood or natural life and when she either

marries or dies then to return to my beloved son James Steelman all the said

two hundred and thirty acres and all the goods and chattles before mentioned

and if my son, James Steelman should die without issue then the whole of my

land and Estate to be sold at public auction & the money to be equally divided

between my son William Steelman, Sealah Cain, John Steelman, Ruth Speer, Rachel

Creson, Charles Steelman, George Steelman, and Elizabeth Speer.

I do hereby constitute and appoint my beloveing son William Steelman and

James Steelman hole and sole Executors of this my Last Will and Testam ent and

I do hereby revoke and disavow and are void all former will by

heretofore made or spoken. In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand

Esquire one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing Last Will and

Testament of Matthias Steelman made oath that he saw said Steelman sign,

pronounce, and declare the same to be his Last Will and Testament that he was

of sound disposing mind and memory and at the same time he saw John Bruce sign

the same as 2nd Witness to the same which was ordered to be recorded.
