ARE ANY OF THE LEAVES AND BLOSSOMS ON OUR FAMILY TREE FAMILIAR? PERHAPS WE ARE RELATED.
Some of the branches are long and full of leaves --- Some are as bare as a northern maple in October ---
A few of the surnames we are tracing:
o BAKE --- A common printable English four-letter word, but not a common surname; our immigrant ancestors were English Quakers (from Yorkshire) who settled in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio after coming to these shores in 1831. Looking for other American cousins and Yorkshire ancestors.
o POE --- Probably not Edgar Allan's kin, but pioneers and Indian fighters on the western Pennsylvania frontier before and during the Revolutionary War. My greatgrandfather, Andrew Poe (1742-1823), and his younger brother, Adam, settled in the area that is now Beaver County, PA. They were in Revolutionary War militia and were active in protecting the western frontier against Indian war parties that were armed by the English. Their most famous action was a fight with a Wyandot raiding party in September 1781 in which two sons of their chief, Half King, were killed. This battle was on the eastern bank of the Ohio River near the mouth of Tomlinson Run (now in WV just opposite and downstream of the present location of Wellsville, OH).
There are many records of descendants of Adam Poe, but records on descendants of Andrew Poe are scarce. Looking for other descendants of Andrew Poe and ancestors of George Jacob Poe (Pow? Pfau?) who we believe came from the Palatinate (Rhineland) area of Germany and settled in Maryland in the early eighteenth century.
o LOCKHART --- Scotch-Irish settlers in the same area as that where the Poes lived in the late eighteenth century. A cousin has brought out many leaves on this tree, but there are more. Looking for background of William Lockhart (1756-1834) who we think came to western Pennsylvania via Virginia after the Revolutionary War.
o FRISZ --- Another cousin has filled out this Alsace-Lorraine tree very well, but we can hope for more.
o ROMESBURG -- Pennsylvania Dutch to the core. My wife still sometimes says to "up the window put"; her grandfather, Hiram Romesberg is buried in Berlin, PA.
We have considerable Lockhart and Poe information on history from the early to mid-18th century in America, but we have almost no details of their specific places of origin in Europe. Bake data are very limited for the period prior to the time Gilbert Bake family immigrated to Westmoreland County, PA in 1831.
Help will be sincerely appreciated, and we will share whenever it is practical,
