Notes for John Hampden Hill: Before the American Civil war, Dr. John Hampden Hill, owned a plantation on the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, NC. The Plantation was known as the Lillyput Place and contained 3700 acres with about 80 slaves. He also owned a house on Water St. in Smithville N.C. Unfortunately for John he chose to support the wrong side in the the war between the states. His properties and lands were confiscated by the government of the United States. After the war he was pardoned by the then President of the United States, Andrew Johnson who was the cecessor to Abraham Lincoln after the former president was assasinated while in office. His properties and lands were returned to him after he swore an oath of alligance to the United Stated of America. All of the properties were lost for none payment of taxes in 1868. This pardon duly signed and recorded in the Library of Congress March 6, 1867. A copy of same is in the posession of his Great, Great, Great Grandson, Francis R. Baker III.
