Notes for János Ferency:
Re: Ferencz vs Ferency: We speculated about this evolution with Jim some
time ago and we developed the following hypothesis: the written form of
letter "z" in former Hungary (N.B. Losonc belonged to Austria-Hungary till
1918) looked very similar to an English "y". We suppose that the Freneczs
arriving to America had to fill in various forms for the immigration
authorities and the Americans simply read the "z" (Ferencz) as "y" (Ferency)
and your ancestors for some unknown reason accepted the new form of their
surname (maybe for a better pronunciation in the new environment? who
knows). This hypothesis seems plausible enough, doesn't it?
