How to Read a Genealogy Report If you have never used a genealogy report before, the following will help you understand what all the numbers mean throughout the report. The superscripted and bold numbers I mention are shown as the number after names, dates, and places. The numbers cannot be shown superscripted in a text file, as this file is. ? 1. JOHN ANDERSON3 BAKER the bold number 1. indicates the family number in the report. ? 2. i. ANDERSON G4. BAKER the non-bolded number 2 indicates that he is the second family in the report. ? 2. i. ANDERSON G.4 BAKER the lower case i. indicates he is the first child of this family. To find more information on Anderson you must go to the bolded number 2. ANDERSON G.4 BAKER (JOHN ANDERSON3, WILLIAM P.2, WILLIAM1), which will show his descendants. ? i. SARAH5 BAKER notice that a family number is not shown for Sarah. This means that Sarah does not have any descendants in the report and that this is all her information. ? 1. JOHN ANDERSON3 BAKER (WILLIAM P.2, WILLIAM1) the superscripted number 3 indicated that John Anderson Baker is the third generation of Bakers. The names in parenthesis (WILLIAM P.2, WILLIAM1) indicate his father William P. Baker is the second generation, and his grandfather William Baker is the first generation. ? 1. JOHN ANDERSON3 BAKER (WILLIAM P.2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1827 in Pickens Dist. South Carolina1. The superscripted number 1 after South Carolina indicated that the source of this information is number 1 in the Footnotes section. Look up number 1 in the Footnotes section and you will see that this information came from the 1850 Early County Georgia Census. ? 1.
