I started in family tree research with my wife Anne about 7 years ago. You will find here details of the Sancrofts of Suffolk (cousins of William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1678-1690) and the Bakers of Norfolk (Abraham Baker, born in Cambridge, was Rector of Kirby Cane & Ditchingham in the 17th century). His 2nd great grandaughter Elizabeth Sancroft Baker married Col. Edward Baker of the Baker family of Bayfordbury, Hertfordshire. Elizabeth's sister Catherine married Benjamin Massey, whose mother was Sarah Gurney, one of the Quaker banking family from Norwich, and cousin of the famous penal reformer Elizabeth Fry. Elizabeth & Catherine's brother Samuel Sancroft Baker moved from Knapton, Norfolk to Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, and he founded the 1st Discount bank - Baker, Gurney & Co., of 36 Lombard Street, London. His son Samuel, my great grandfather, married Ada Louise Henderson, whose great grandfather Robert was Commissioner to the 1st Duke of Northumberland at Syon House, and house steward to the 2nd Duke at Alnwick, Northumberland. Ada Louise had a granduncle, William Allen, who joined the RN in 1804 and was on H.M.S. "Naiad" at Trafalgar that year. He later explored the Niger, St. Helena & the Ascension Islands, and became a rear-admiral. Data for the above originated from family tree manuscripts compiled by Samuel's son Eric Sancroft Baker, my grandfather, who died in 1960, and has subsequently been confirmed and added to from official sources. I have also entered details of the Swan family of Northumberland,(of whom my great grandfather Henry Frederick Swan designed the first ocean-going Tanker, the "Gluckauf", and was a founder member of Swan Hunters Shipyard on the river Tyne). My grandmother was Mary Calvert Swan and my mother Norah Mary Lifford Plunket. I have entered the Plunket family tree, which is a branch of the Plunket(t) family of Ireland. This goes back to William the Conqueror. Another branch on my father's side is the Honner family who lived in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, in the 19th century. They were descendants of farmers from Trumera, Mountrath, Co. Laois. Of these my great grandfather Captain Joseph Honner left Ireland at a young age to join the RN. My wife has now entered details of her families - the Hicklins of Leicestershire/Derbyshire and the Plummers of Derbyshire. The tree is constantly being updated from official records. Information on any branch of the family would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
