Notes for Milton Douglas Hodges: Subject: Michael Alan Hodges Date: 12/3/06 8:54:40 P.M. Eastern Standard Time Dorene - I am Milton Douglas Hodges, Jr and William Michael was my brother. Are you doing a family genealogy search or just looking for specific info for Michael? You happened to contact Charles Ziegler, a distant cousin to my wife. They are both involved in extensive genealogy research for several families.Charles in turn contacted her when he received your email. Let me know what you need. Doug *************** Subject: Re: Hodges family Date: 12/4/06 1:58:58 P.M. Eastern Standard Time Dorene - This is Etta, Doug's wife.I'm the researcher and have all of the info.Kelly is my oldest daughter and helped with much of the research. Most of my data is in storage but a lot in my memory; I will contact Kelly as I am sure that she backed up all of her info on CDs. Kelly is old enough (39) to remember Mike well. Give me a day or two to pull some things together As a start:Edith Mae Gore Hodges was born in Jacksonville, Milton Sr was born in Memphis. They are both buried here in Jacksonville; Mike's ashes are interred at their site. Milton Sr was in the Navy and retired around 1958 and served in WW2.He was buried with honors. Milton Sr. : parents are Austin Douglas Hodges and Lula Milton Hodges.I have their birthplaces, etc in my files. Edith Mae: parents Johnnie Edith Howard Gore and Johnnie Gore.We know virtually nothing of Johnnie Gore, but there's quite a story in his life for telling later. Johnnie Edith Howard Gore:mother was Mary Howard and I can't recall her father's name without some research. I have dates and much more but must take some time to go through my files. Mike was a remarkable person; loved by all. Talk to you soon Etta Johnson Hodges *************** Subject: Re: Hodges family Date: 12/4/06 8:22:11 P.M. Eastern Standard Time Yes, Mike's first mount was Jennifer Star and we have a picture of him just prior to the race. It's a photo we cherish. As for his career, I will talk to Doug; he and Mike are two years apart in age and he can fill you in on what he knows. Doug and I met in 1964.Mike had already started his career and I did not meet him until a few years later. He did race at Sunshine Park at Hialeah and then during off season went north with the horses. Doug is retired from the Air Force so we traveled quite a bit and did not see Mike often as he was also traveling. You said the Michael Alan is your nephew; how are you related? When will Michael's eighteenth birthday so I will have a time frame on finding the box in storage. Also, it sounds as though you are 'into' genealogy as I have been for years. My daughter and I have conducted years of research on different family lines and devoted lots of volunteer time to USGenWeb.org.It's a great place for research. Also I will check with Kelly. At one time she had an entire web site based on a branch of my family that may contain additional info. I can tell you though, that on the Hodges and Gore sides we hit dead ends in Memphis and here in Jax.Primarily this was due to a name change of Edith's father at a young age. So we can't get past him in that direction. The Howards were based mainly in Jax and we have a bit more info. One of the great-grands was a stone mason and some of his work still stands in a park here in town. We could not get past Austin Douglas Hodges in Memphis and made it one generation more on Lula Milton.Just as side note, we have five generations of men in the family with Douglas as a middle name:Austin, Milton Sr, Milton Jr (my Doug) our sonColin Douglas and our grandson Jonathan Douglas. If you would like to give me your phone number, I will be happy to call and we can find out what we need to fill in for you. Etta ************ Subject: Re: Hodges family Date: 12/11/06 7:31:49 P.M. Eastern Standard Time Sorry, I get caught up in the names.Edith's mother was Johnnie Edith Howard and the father was John Gore. John Gore came from some part of NC but his original last name is lost to us as he was involved very young in criminal incident. What appears to be known is that he was involved in a fight and a man died.Remember in the early 1900s, Indians or any race other than white were treated badly. This fight appeard to be over bigotry because he was Cherokee. We believe that his name may have been Reis or Rice and family stories say that he was of French descent. The name change led us to a dead end. You may know that Edith was quarter cherokee. You have only to look at her and my husband to see it. Kelly and I spent a lot of time researching the Cherokee Census rolls but came up empty handed.John Gore just seemed to appear out of thin air.Not unusual for those times. Edith entrusted to me many old photos of family and some older obits.I will have them copied as soon as possible (probably after the holidays) and send them to you. I know that you are anxiously on the trail (been there!) but work and the holidays are slowing me down. Hang in there - **************** Subject: Re: Hodges family Date: 12/13/06 3:42:18 P.M. Eastern Standard Time Edith and Milton are buried in Jacksonville Memory Gardens here in Jax (really just across the county line so technically it's Orange Park). Mike's ashes are interred at their site.Doug tells me that Mike was born here in Jacksonville. I have been through all of my hard drive backups through 2004 and cannot find my files.Kelly and I used Family Tree Maker. For me, that was two computers ago.I'm still waiting to hear from Kelly but she's a working mom.She keeps everything so we'll see. |
