1. COVE CHARLES¹ MCKINNEY was born in Scotland. He married (1) RACHAEL LOWERY. He married (2) ELIZA POOR. He married (3) ELIZABETH LOWERY. He married (4) NANCY TRIPLETT. He married (5) MARGARET "PEGGY" LOWERY. He married (6) SARAH "SALLY" HOBSON.

Notes for COVE CHARLES MCKINNEY:
Charles McKinney was born in Scotland and emigrated to Ireland. He was conscripted into the British Forces there and was sent to America to fight in the Revolutionary War. After the war ended he gathered together a wagon load of apple trees and headed for North Carolina with the trees and his two wives. He settled in the Cove from which he received his name of Cove Charles McKinney. There he met his first wife from North Carolina, Sarah "Sally" Hobson. He eventually had a total of seven wives and forty-eight children. He built a seperate home for each of his seven wives and their children. He visited with each of his wives and children on a regular basis; staying two days with each one and then moving to the next one. His large homestead was comprised of 1200 acres and eventually became legally known as McKinney Gap. On this location he developed the beautiful apple orchard which would eventually become known as the "Holston Orchard". He made sure that each one of his large family had plenty to eat by building a large smokehouse which he kept filled with preserved meats and canned goods. Today the Apple House has been converted to a public reception hall and entertainment and dancing are quite the norm. Even though the orchard was rundown, the new young owners have been busily restoring it to the high production facility that it once was. The orchard is located adjacent to the Scenic Parkway a short distance from the intersection of Hwy 226 at Gillespie Gap, NC.
