HARLES SPARKS:
Charles Sparks, older brother of James, enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private. He enlisted in Company I of the 29th North Carolina Regiment on July 11, 1861. He served as a herdsman until July 7, 1863 when he deserted to join the Union Army. Both brothers were then fighting on the same side. Before that they were the classic example of brother fighting brother, with James giving allegience to the Union, and Charles giving allegience to the Confederacy.

9. JAMES MARVIN3 SPARKS (RACHAEL MARGARET2 MCKINNEY, COVE CHARLES1) was born December.27.1843 in Mitchell County , NC, and died February.23.1923 in Mitchell County , NC. He married NANCY LOUVINIA BRINKLEY March.13.1870 in Bandana, NC, daughter of ALEXANDER BRINKLEY and ANNIE SHOAF.

ANCY LOUVINIA BRINKLEY:
Nancy Louvinia Brinkley and James Marvin Sparks were married at Bandana, NC by the Reverend Wilborn Robertson. They lived in the Snow Creek Community. Nancy was the daughter of Alexander and Annie Shoaf Brinkley who were both born in Davidson County, NC. Nancy had a twin brother named Sam J. Brinkley.
During his lifetime, he had the longest beard in the world. His beard grew until it was 5' 8" long. It reached the floor and lapped over three times. Alexander Brinkley of Mecklenburg, NC (Charlotte) was from one of Mecklenburg County's oldest pioneer families. The Brinkley's were of Scotch and German descent and were early settlers near Charlotte. Four members of the family signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 1775.
