Alipio Ferreira - A Mystery Man

Alipio Augusto Ferreira (1837 - 1915) is undoubtedly related
to Cora da Costa Seiffert though the exact relation is unknown.
I suspect he may have been her great uncle or perhaps a cousin,
 since the age difference between them was more than 50 years 
and because she referred to him by his first name..

Alipio's name appears at the following website, which, so far 
as I can tell, discusses Madeiran literature.  The site is in 
Portugese, so this is my own rough translation.

Ferreira Alipio Augusto He was born in the vicinity of Santa Cruz
 [Madeira] on 27 Dec 1837. He attended the secondary school in 
Funchal and was professor of elementary instruction, exercising 
later the position of notary for {unknown word} of this district.  
He had an important collaboration in prose and verse in various 
Madeira journals and was principal editor of "Patria".  According 
to Inocencio, he wrote the novels of {unknown word} and romance 
in six installments which quickly went to press, but which did 
not manage to be published as one volume, except for some excerpts 
in various journals.   He resided for many years in Demerara; 
there he was editor of a journal in Portuguese.  He was a merchant, 
but had little success in his commercial transactions, coming to 
die in New York, no {unknown word} hospital, on 3 August 1915, 
in misery and the most complete obscurity.

His business in Demerara, British Guiana (now Guyana) was called 
"Ferreira and Santos". 

Curious items from his death certificate:
1) His residence is listed as the same home shown for Cora da Costa 
in his Ellis Island record the year before.  Yet the death certificate
 also states he had been in NY only ONE day!  Had he left and 
come back?  Where did he go?  Or did he stay for a year and no one 
wanted to say so?
2) Cause of death is listed as Chronic Endocarditis and Arterio 
Sclerosis, with contributory cause of "old gunshot wound of the 
head with loss of brain tissue".  How old was this wound?  How does 
loss of brain tissue bring on endocarditis?
