  Notes for Armistead Gordon:
Armistead and Elizabeth, brother and sister were living at Germanna and had made wills providing for the freedom of their slaves and their return to Liberia. It is said that a negro slave girl who had been taught to read and write found the wills hidden in a bureau drawer and told the othe slaves. A few days after this the two old people died suddenly (it is said from poison placed in the food by the servants). The will was carried out and the slaves sent to Liberia where they were not happy and begged to return.
