Lee Bankston as a young man helped his father farm in Tunica County. I remember tales he had told me like how he had to walk to school every day up hill both ways bare footed. Of course he was just kidding, especially if you are familiar with the Mississippi Delta. (Flat land as far as the eye can see.)
The house he was born in is still standing and occupied, located West off Highway 61. The house is a two story dwelling white in color. As a young adult he resided in Bobo, Coahoma County, Mississippi where he continued farming for a living. He and my mother (who ran a small grocery store) had Pete, Faith, Myself, and Debbie while living in Bobo (this home is still occupied at this time). The farm was very productive. A few years after Debbie was born, The family moved to Duncan, Bolivar County, Mississippi, where he continued farming. My mother continued in the grocery store business. The land that he was farming was poor and he showed loses several years in a row. This resulted in him selling out and finding other work. The family moved again, this time to Tutwiler, Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. Mom continued in the country grocery store business. Dad was hired to help run a gasoline full service, service station. He later was hired to drive a gasoline delivery truck. This is the job he retired from. He then just helped mom in the grocery business until they closed the store for good. Retired life was not the best time for him. He suffered from depression and his health was continually on the decline. He picked himself up during the time of Mom's sudden decline in health, but went back downhill after her death in 1996.

Wednesday, April 7, 1999 he had a fall, but didn't tell anyone until April 10 when he asked Pete to Call Dr. Brooks. Of course for Daddy to call for Dr. Brooks he had to be hurting extremely bad. He was admitted to NWMRMC. He was diagnosed with a hairline fracture of the right collarbone, pneumonia, and probable kidney infection. His white blood count was higher than the ER physician had ever seen in his career (69,000). Upon his discharge from the hospital he was also diagnosed with leukemia. His white blood cell count was still extremely high, (44,000). His hospital stay lasted one week. At home he was weak, but his mind remained clear. He had no appetite for solid food and would take very little fluid intake. Even though he experienced some pain he would refuse pain medication when it was offered. We took turns sitting with him. On the morning of April 21, 1999 Cindy (my wife) called me at the fire station approximately 6:00 am and told me Faith had called and stated that she thought Daddy had died in the night. When she had touched him he was cold and stiff and that Dr. Brooks had been called and was on her way. Upon my arrival Dr. Brooks had confirmed that he had died and the coroner had arrived. The official cause of death by the coroner was heart failure secondary to leukemia. Visitation was set for April 22,1999 at Nowell Funeral Home from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services at Nowell Funeral Home chapel at 2:00 PM April 23, 1999 with burial at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. He finally received what he had been asking for since Mama died "To go home" and "Be with Mama".
