Descendants of Nathaniel Harriman (Herriman) Ontario, Canada

Updated November 28, 2008

Nathaniel Harriman was born in Norwich,CT in 1758 He married Bethania Snow in Hardwick, MA in 1781 and they had 9 children. DNA tests have indicated that he is the great grandson of Leonard and a grandson of Matthew but we have not yet identified his father, for certain. Nathaniel received a land grant of 200 acres near the town of Cobourg, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario (then called Hamilton in Upper Canada) on September 1, 1797. He may have been referred to as a "Simcoe Loyalist". Records show that he traded 100 acres for a yoke of oxen shortly after their arrival. A recently published progenealogist report, completed for the Harriman Family Association, although not conclusive, supports the idea that Nathaniel and Jonathan were indeed the sons of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Knight. We think Nathaniel was the son of Matthew and his as yet unknown second wife, and DNA seems to confirm this

Diadamia was the youngest daughter of Nathaniel and Bethania. She was reported to be "stolen from the lake shore" near Cobourg, Ontario by Mississauga Indians on June 7, 1797 just 4 weeks after the family arrived from Rupert, Vermont. A poem written by Bethania entitled "The Lost Child" is posted on the page below. Her poem was meant to tell her parents, Jesse and Mary Snow,(nee Eaton)in Hardwick, MA, about the loss of Diadamia. Marriages of the other siblings are also shown in the file.

Nathaniel, his second son, is the direct line ascendant to the author. He was a well respected person and served in the Provincial Dragoons during the war of 1812 -1815. His younger brother, Luther, was also in the Canadian Militia during that war. Luther then became a physician and was married twice; the first to Sarah White (5 children) (Sarah may have died as a result of childbirth complications) and the second to Abigail Dean. That marriage produced 7 children. Two sons, Weston Leroy and Elbridge also became physicians. After serving on the Union side during the Civil War, as surgeons, they both returned to establish practices in Lindsay, Ontario. Elbridge then moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota some time after 1879.

The Harriman History (Feudalism to Freedom)by Lois Ware Thurston, comments on the Harriman Name. The name Harriman was not uncommon in England, suggesting there was no one Harriman family, but several unrelated families with the same name. Some of the earliest Harriman records were found in Uldale and it was only in these records that another Harriman with the Christian name "Leonard" was found. Uldale is in Cumberland County (the Lake District) in Northern England near the Scottish border (and recent center of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease)

Charles W. Bardsley, author of “A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames”, claims the name Harryman is an occupational name meaning "servant of Henry" which when spoken sounds like "Harry”. When the Harriman’s left Uldale it was likely to find a better way of life, rather than religious freedom. Leonard and John Harriman found themselves caught up in the Great Migration of the 1630's. and arrived with Reverend E Rogers in New England in 1638. They set out from Rawley, Yorkshire, England.

Please refer to the InterneTree section on this web page to track family relationships. Thanks to the late Berkeley Henley, Historian of the Harriman Family Association, for his patience and guidance, cousins Dorothy Ozaruk (nee Hendry), Cora Farrow (nee Deacon), Nancy Horne (nee Herriman) and Michael Pearson (mother, Anne Irene Harriman)have supplied great assistance as well. We also thank Connie Chism, John Owen Melcher and Adrienne Pilz, who are related to the Harriman family and offer continued support.

Recent discovery regarding my maternal family (Moon) has extended that ancestry line by 3 generations. Great sleuthing and detailed study by cousin Chris Moon with a critical clue from cousin Eleanor Cook, both greatly appreciated.

This was only 4 weeks after the family had arrived from Rupert, Vermont as "Simcoe Loyalists". No trace of Diadamia was reported for 200 years but recently a researcher, Connie Chism, has hopes that she was in fact kidnapped and raised by the Mississauga Indians in the New Credit Reserve, (Brantford) Ontario. More details are forthcoming.

  • An article taken from Grey County Records, Ontario (256 KB)
An interesting piece written about Nathaniel Harriman and his civil service record in Ontario. He was a veteran of the 1812-1815 War between Canada and the US and served with the Provincial Dragoons. His younger brother, Luther, was in the Canadian Militia, both participating in the battle of Lundy's Lane and Luther's regiment were referred to as the Redcoat Ploughboy's. Although this article states that Nathaniel was of both English and German heritage, this is incorrect. His grandson, Eugene Augustus, married Mina Benner, and her family was from Germany, adding that mixture to subsequent generations. See information on the Benner family through the InterneTree and Surname list on the web page.

His son Angus Augustus and grandson Eugene Augustus are buried at this site and their names appear on the stone on the left side. Angus's wife, Sarah Connell is also buried there.
