Updated July 5, 2004

Hi, I'm Judy C. Sample, and I am researching several surnames.

On my father's side they are:Sample, Gayden( of East Feliciana Parish),La.,& Tillman, Gooden (of Pointe Coupee parish, La.).

The Gaydens are the beginning, and all the others originate from there:

Our Gayden Family History (As handed down to us)

In the early 1800’s, Judge George Gayden of East Feliciana Parish, in the small town of Gurley, La., went to Bolliver Ms. to buy slaves. One of the slaves, Caroline, was taken into Judge Gayden’s home as a housekeeper. She was the first generation of the Gayden Family. She had one child, a daughter named Sicely.

Judge Gayden bought another group of slaves, and Joseph Perkins was among them. After being bought by Judge George Gayden, he was named Joseph Gayden because during that time, slaves were given their master’s surname. Judge Gayden performed the ceremonies for Joseph Gayden and Mama Sue. To this union two children were born, both girls, Dizer and Matt.

Later, Joe Gayden married Sicely. From this union, Our Gayden branch began.

Joseph and Sicely had fourteen children, eight died at an early age, and six lived to be adults. They were:

Joseph Gayden, Jr., who had two children, Shelly and Dave.

Callie Gayden Sample and John Sample had six children. The five that live to adulthood were: Venus, John Jr., Sadie, Eugene, and Pearl.

Nancy Gayden Richardson and Levi Richardson had six children: Alma, Wilma, Josephine, Huey, Joseph, and Alice.

Alma Gayden and Shelly Scott married, but had no children. They adopted a daughter, Sicely.

Josephine Gayden married Zonk Williams and the had one child, as son named Joe, who died at an early age.

Jessie Gayden married Nettie Thomas and they had five children: They are Jessie Jr., Albertha, Augustine, Aell, and Marthanna.

The descendants of Joseph and Sicely Gayden have a host of great and great-great and great-great-great grandchildren.

Sadie Sample Green - Historian -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------On my Mom's side I'm researching:Joseph, Malone, Antoine, Vanwright, Arthurlee (Attoli) ( Attolie)all of St. Landry Parish.

The Josephs are the beginning of this line the other surnames originate from here.

The Joseph Family History

Jules Joseph, our "Papa" was born of mixed heritage. His mother was black and his father was white making Papa Jules a mulatto, and a "free" Black.. Papa Jules was nicknamed "Nuck" or called "Uncle Julien" by everyone who knew him whether they were related or not.Papa Jules came by boat from Virginia with his parents and settled in ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA. He later went to OPELOUSAS, LA to fight in the Civil War. He was soon made Commander. At the time, he had a wife( name unknown) and two sons. One son was Joseph Joseph . This son communicated with Mr. Ferdie Thierry many years ago. It is believed that he moved to OKLAHOMA but was never heard from again.Papa Jules’ second wife was CELEZIA LOUISE VEAZIE. He met her in the PLAISANCE GRAND PRAIRIE Territory. They were soon married and birthed eight children: CELIZA, CORINE, CELESTINE, CORA, ALBERT, JULES, JOE, & MARIE. After Mama Celezia died, PAPA JULES married ADELLE ARTHURLEE, who was also from the PLAISANCE GRAND PRAIRIE TERRITORY. This union brought forth nine children: EMILY (My great-grandma), VERLIE, ANTHONY, NATHAN, VICTORIA, ALMA, HARRIET, OLEVIA & MARGIE. Mama Adelle died before Papa Jules, but Aunt Alma was still living in the house when Papa Jules died.

The old homesite can now be seen down Parish Road 70, which is down the first road on the left, after passing Plaisance High School, going North. The place is the second house on the right and has been rebuilt. The original house had four rooms with a front porch the length of the house.
