Notes for E
MPEROR OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE CHARLEMAGNE:
Charlemagne or Charles the Great, was the greatest figure of the Middle Ages. He was the greatest of the Carolingian rulers. He was anointed as King with his brother Carolman by Pope Stephen III at St. Dennis, France in 754. He is said to have been nearly eight feet tall and so stong that with his hands he could squeeze together three horseshoes. He is said to have had nine wives or concubines. He ate with his 14 children and took them with him often. He was a German, but reigned over France, half of Germany, part of Spain, and much of Italy. He taught himself to speak Latin and studied astronomy, rhetric, and music. He encouraged learning and established a school at aix-la-Chapelle.

He fought the idolatrous Saxons for 30 years, and compelled their chief to accept Christian baptism. In 800 he was crowned at Rome "Emperor of the West."

The lineage of Charlemagne can be traced to Marc Anthony, and from Heli, King of the Britons. After his father's death in 768, he jointly reigned over the Franks with his brother, Carlomen, until the latter's death in 772. From that time until his death, he was sole ruler and carried on incessant wars, extending his domains and spreading Christiantiy, until he had a vast domain, over which he was crowned Roman Emperor in 800 by Pope Leo III, with the Iron Crown of the Western Empire. He was a wise statesman, he encouraged learning, and was a great general.

In 1939 during WWII, the golden bejeweled coffin containing the bones of Charlemagne was removed from Aachen Cathdral (the king's ancient capital) for safekeeping, then taken to Siegen, east of Cologne. In June 1945, it was restored to the much damaged Cathedral at Aachen in the presence of a great audience gathered to return the remains of their patron saint.

His descendants are called the Carlovingians.
