J. A Barstow served in the Crimea. The regimental history of the 87th and 89th records the following as regards the preparations of Ensign John Barstow for war:


" Highly patriotic speeches and toasts followed, interspersed with what
the newspaper described as ‘most vociferous cheering’; though, as it
turned out, the draft did not sail for the Crimea until the beginning
of May 1855. One of the officers present at the ‘Waterford Dejeuner’
was Ensign John Barstow. Barstow’s bill from Landon and Morland,
the regimental tailors, dated August 1854, the month of his com-
mission-has been preserved, together with a number of his letters from the Crimea and afterwards.

The whole bill came to the considerable sum of £113. 1s. 6d. It included the following items:


A superfine Scarlet Tunic richly Embd and laced with Gold,
lined with Silk, velvet facings .
A Regiml Chaco Ornts & Cover . .
A Japan tin Case for Do. . .
A Blue Mixd Cloth Morng Coat, bound with braid
A portable Iron Tub.Tent Bedstead with Bedding, Mattrass,
Bedbox & Valize complete . . .
A chest of Solid Mahogany Drawers with Secretaire
A Portable Suspensory Reclining chair with horsehair
Cushions, etc. . . . .
A Portable Mahogy Oval washstand with fitting and tub
complete . . . . .
A Kidderminster Carpet for Barrackroom .
A new Crimson Silk Sash . .
A Portable Slide Looking Glass . .

One wonders how many of these items ever found their way up the hill from Balaclava"

John Barstow (Uncle Jack) was killed when he lost control of hi new patent safety bycicle on the hill down to Cranbeck Bridge on the way to Ryton. The road is now much less steep than it was when he was killed in 1899.
