Letter on Retirement from Royal Navy
9 September, 1959
Sir,
On the occasion of your retirement My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty desire me to convey their appreciation of your service in the Royal Navy over a period of more than thirty three years.
My Lords recall that after your early training you served mainly in destroyers and that during the Second. World War you commanded H.M. Ships MALCOlM, COWDRAY, VELOX and RELENTLESS. You were consistently successful in these appointments and after serving as Commanding Officer of H.M.S. CHIVALROUS from October, 1947 to 17th December, 1949, you were promoted to Commander on 31st December, 1949.
As Executive Officer of H.M.S. DEVONSHIRE from December, 1952 to August, 1953 and then of H.M.S. TRIUMPH until April, 1954. you displayed marked ability and great interest in the training of cadets. You were equally successful as Executive Officer of the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport where, for two years from July, 1954-, your sound organisation and firm control enabled a very full progranune of activities to be successfully carried out.
You were promoted to Captain on 31 at December, 1956 while attending a course at the North Atlantic Treaty Organąsation Defence College and in July, 1957 you were appointed as Naval Attache, Athens. In this, your last appointment on the active list, you discharged your duties cheerfully and. effectively, and despite the delicate political situation maintained good relations with Greek Naval officers.
In conclusion, My Lords regret that the tine has now cane to transfer your name from the active to the retired list of the Royal Navy.
I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant,
