Notes for Harold Bartram: The 192 acre farm at the junction of the Plenty and Yarra Rivers was bought by James Williamson in 1839. He named the property Viewbank. Unfortunately for Williamson, the debts he incurred in the recession during the 1840s forced him to sell the property. His advertisements described the home as 'A genteel residence, detached stables, coach house, gardens and in every respect calculated for the reception of a respectable family'.
Dr Martin Finally, after the property had been advertised in the Port Phillip Herald several times between August 1841 and November 1842, it was bought in 1844 by George Gear. The purchase was for Gear's daughter Lucy on the occasion of her marriage to wealthy squatter, Dr. Robert Martin. Women at that time could not own property, therefore Dr Martin had power of attorney and owned Viewbank. It became the family's Melbourne residence until Dr Martin's death in 1874.
After being let to numerous tenants, the Viewbank farm was bought by Harold Bartram in 1922 and became a family property again until the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works took ownership in 1983. Today it belongs to Parks Victoria.
