Notes for George Baillie: George Baillie purchased estates of Jerviswood in 1636 and Mellerstain in 1642.
Mellerstain is one of the great houses of Scotland and its history is entangled with national history for at least five hundred years. The estate is mentioned as early as 1451 when Patrick Haliburton, son of Lord Haliburton, received from King James II of Scotland the lands of Mellerstain. They passed through various hands until, at the end of the fifteenth century, they came into the possession of the Haitlie family, and remained so for 140 years. One of the Haitlies was killed in a feud in 1603 (the Border was a wild and lawless place in those days) and shortly afterwards the family became impoverished. King Charles I granted a charter of the lands to Sir John Edmonstone of Ednam, but he did not hold them long, for in 1642 they were made over by Royal Charter to George Baillie of Jerviswood, son of a prosperous merchant burgess of Edinburgh.
