Notes for WILLIAM EVANS, SR.:
(1) The children listed for William on this pedigree are assumed based on census records, age of individual, and residence location. The William Evans that sailed on the Adventurer from London is assumed to be the same William Evans listed here basically because of his connection to Robert Mason who also sailed on the same voyage and lived in the same area as this William Evans.
(2) An excerpt from an old letter, author unknown, reads: "The second person of interest aboard the 'Adventurer" was William EVANS. His age was given as 19 when he sailed, and he was from London. I have located this Evans in London parish registers, who was christianed 9 Feb, 1756 at St. Mary Whitechapel, Stepney London. He was the son of John Evans and Hannah Nokes, who were married 19 January, 1748 at Westminster St. Paul, Covent Garden, London. Further, Hannah Nokes was christianed 12 Sept. 1728 at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, the daughter of John Nokes and Hannah ------. John Evans appears to have been the son of John Evans & Martha ------. The Wm. Evans who came to America had a brother, John, christianed Feb. 28, 1759 at St. Sepulchre, London."
(3) William Evans traveled with his alleged cousin, Robert Mason from Stepney, London, England on the ship "Adventurer" and eventually settled 3/4 of the way up on Evans Mountain. Evans Mountain is at the head of Little Clear Creek past the Fuson Chapel Church at what used to be called Fuson Settlement and is now collectively called Little Clear Creek, off of hwy. 190. It is several miles before Chenoa and is reached before entering the Big Clear Creek/Harmony Elementary school area. Evans Mtn. faces Meldrum and Cannon Lake on the other side. After crossing the creek when it is low, the area can only be reached by foot or four-wheel drive.the mountain. His home stood beside "Kettle Rock" where Indians used to grind their corn, and he is said to have settled in that spot in order to see the whites of the Indians' eyes if they came for his family. Today can be seen brick chimneys, other remains of house sites, rock walls, Kettle Rock, orchard areas, and a couple of cemetaries with several marked stones.
(4) The Evans children and grandchildren and other descendants became Baptist preachers, farmers, and doctors in Bell county. Areas on the mtn. are called "Evans Gap" and "Baptist Gap." The last Evans, Mittie Shelton Evans moved out of the mountain in the 1950's.
