Descendants of William Evans, Sr.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 EVANS (WILLIAM1) was born 1776 in Hampshire County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Knox County, Kentucky. He married SARAH HAYNES August 22, 1795 in Botetourt County, Virginia. She was born Abt. 1780 in Virginia or North Carolina.

Notes for J
OHN EVANS:
1. According to "History of Bell County, Volume 1" by Henry Harvy Fuson; John Evans settled on Evans Mountain; the divide between Little Clear Creek and the Yellow Creek Valley at Middlesboro, Kentucky; in about the year 1780. Evans Mountain was a part of Log Mountain and was named after John Evans who was its first settler. It is near Canada Peak that overlooks the present town of Middlesboro. A large hollowed out round place in a large rock is located near where John Evans resided. Indians used this place to grind their corn with a large pestle. It is known today as "Kettle Rock". It was named this because it is about the size of a large kettle, large enough to grind corn for a whole Indian settlement.
2. Regarding the above, research is leading to the belief that John Evans settled on "Evans Mountain" with his alleged father, William Evans, Sr. In my opinion, John was too young to be the first settler here in 1780. Early tax, land and census records indicate that there was a William Evans living on Evans Mountain (formally known as Log Mountain). They probably settled in Kentucky in about 1806, the same time that Robert Mason settled in the area.
3. 1850 Knox County, Kentucky Census [roll 209, page 344, house #334, family #339] shows John residing with William & Elizabeth Mason. It also indicates that John Evans' age is 76 and he is insane. John is not listed as a member of Elizabeth and William's household in the 1860 Knox County, Kentucky Census, nor can he be found in any other household. It is likely that John died between 1850 and 1860. He is buried on top of a mountain near Phoebe Branch in Little Clear Creek, Kentucky. Only his name, year born and state of birth is listed on his headstone. There are 9 other known individuals buried at this site plus 9 unmarked graves. The graveyard is commonly referred to as Evans Cemetery.
4. TENATIVE Outline for Children of John & Sarah (Haynes) Evans:

      i. Elizabeth Evans - b. 1798, m. William Mason

ii. Female Evans - b. Between 1800-1810, probably Abt. 1800
      Notes:
      (1) This is the unidentified female that appeared in John & Sarah Evans household in 1810
      & 1820:
1810 Census: 1 of the 4 females age range 0-10 [born between 1800-1810]
1820 Census: the 1 female age range 16-26 [born between 1794-1804]
      (2) Not listed in John & Sarah Evans household in 1830.
      (3) [An unproven theory] Could this be the mother of Elizabeth "Eliza" Evans-King that
possibly died due to childbirth complications? If so, then consequently Eliza was
raised by John & Sarah Evans as their own and was thought by everyone as such.

iii. Female Evans - b. Between 1800-1810, probably Abt. 1801
      Notes:
      (1) This is the unidentified female that appeared in John & Sarah Evans houshold in 1810
1810 Census: 1 of the 4 females age range 0-10 [born between 1800-1810]
      (2) Not listed in John & Sarah Household in 1820.
      (3) Could this be the Cynthia Evans that was born in 1801 Knox County, KY that married
John Baughman in 1819? Need to do more research on her before further conclusions
      can be made.

      iv. Rev. William H. Evans - b. 1802, m. Margaret "Peggy" Bull

      v. James Evans - b. Between 1800-1810, probably Abt. 1804, m. Nancy

1810 Census: 1 of the 4 females age range 0-10 [born between 1800-1810]
      (2) Not listed in John & Sarah Evans household in 1820.
      (3) [An unproven theory] This female could possibly be the unidentified female living in
William & Elizabeth (Evans) Mason's household in 1820, age range 10-16. The
unidentified female is thought to be a sister of Elizabeth and thus, this would explain 2
of the 4 female children that disappeared in John & Sarah Evans' household between
      the 1810 and 1820 census.
      (4) Robert & Elizabeth (Evans) Mason has in their 1820 Census:
1 female age range 10-16 (born between 1804-1810]

viii. Female Evans - b. Between 1800-1810, probably Abt. 1810
      Notes:
      (1) This is the unidentified female in John & Sarah Evans household in 1810.
1810 Census: 1 of the 4 females age range 0-10 [born between 1800-1810]
      (2) Not listed in John & Sarah Evans household in 1820.

ix. Female Evans - b. Between 1810-1820, probably Abt. 1815
      Notes:
      (1) This is the unidentified female listed in John & Sarah Evans household in 1820:
1820 Census: 1 female age range 0-10 [born between 1810-1820]
      (2) Not listed in John & Sarah Evans household in 1830.

      x. Lucinda Evans - b. 1819, m. James Robinson Fuson Jr.

xi. Margaret "Peggy" Evans - b. Between 1820-1830, probably Abt. 1824, m. Elam Partin
