Thomas Barnes arrived in what is now Putman County, Tennessee prior to 1816 and settled on a farm east of Cookville, TN at what is now the intersection of US70 and Interstate 40. His first wife was Alice Bohannon, daughter of William Bohannon, a Revolutionary War veteran who also settled in the same area. Thomas and Alice had ten children. Thomas later married Mary Strien and they also had ten children. Thus began the saga of the Barnes Family of the upper Cumberland River are in Tennessee.
