Greta Barker Blair's Article (#161) in "Families of Washington Co. and Bristol, Virginia 1776-1996": THOMAS O. BARKER AND REBECCA (GADDY) BARKER Between the years 1959 and 1984, my late husband and I took seven summer trips to Virginia / Tennessee area searching records of my father's people. It was not until August 2, 1977 that we called at a farm place of Gordon Barker in Mendota, Virginia. There, preserved in an old ledger, were entries made by Gordon's grandfather indicating his lineage - exactly 100 years earlier to the day, earlier. Edmond, (1837-1908), ninth of nine children of Sherwood and wife Rachel (Lark) Barker, wrote August 2, 1877:

"Great grandfather and his wife Martha Snead - Joel settled American Bottoms. Thomas and his wife Rebecca Gaddy - Charles Barker - John - Susan - Rachel - Betsy - Polly ... My great, great, grandfather Edward was a cousin to King Charles and a teacher in the Presbyterian High School in London. He died a short time after he came to the Colony. Great grandfather, John Barker, he sold his land to a man named Richman and Richmond City was named after him".

Dear Mr. Barker, I have taken a little while to reply to you because I did not want to make the immediate response that we had nothing relevant to your search. We have nothing direct but I have obtained one or two items that might give leads.

Two general points:
(1) I do not think your ancestors would be a LEGITIMATE cousin to King Charles. If he was a cousin at all it would be on the wrong side of the blanket.
(2) There was no school known as Presbyterian High School in London but there were a number of Dissenting Academies which had Presbyterian connections...
Sincerely, Fred Kiney (Honorary Research Secretary)

From "Genealogy of Roger Miller Family" courtesy Roger Miller p. 17: While there were no Presbyterian schools in London in the early 1700's it is reported the names of some schools were later changed to Presbyterian.

In Montgomery County, Thomas Barker (ca 1753- ca 1817) gave proof of his "near 7 years service under different commanders" in the Revolutionary War and being "legally disbanded"" was entitled to land under the King of Great Britian Proclamation of 1863 and the Land Warrent of Virginia of May 1779. A survey for Thomas was made December 21, 1781 for 30 acres in Washington County - lower Wolf Run, a north branch of Abraham's Creek - a south branch of the North Fork of the Holston River. A second survey was made April 22, 1782 was for 100 acres of land on both sides of Kendrick's Creek.
