BIOGRAPHY: Callie experianced a lively 76 years begining in FairfieldCounty, Ohio where she was born. Shortly after her birth the Ballmerfamily relocated to Napoleon Ohio. It was there in 1856 that her fatherlost his life in an independance day fireworks accident. After his death Callie's Mother (At her sisters request) returned Callie and her sister Becky to live with Aunt Becky and Uncle John in Fairfield County. In 1870 at the age of 17 Callie worked for Samuel Rodebaugh a blacksmith inLiberty Township. She worked as a domestic servant for $1.00 a day plusroom and board with an extra dollar if there was a baby in the house. Her sister Rebecca (Becky) had the same deal at the age of 14 in that same year. Callie was a woman remembered with strong principles and a good sense of humor. When The methodist Minister in Dumontville was preaching against baking soda as a tool of the devil she invited the Minister and his wife to dinner. She served them a cake made with the evil substance. She later told the Ministers wife the truth of the ingredients. There was no more preaching against it. Relatives remember her stories told with a"Pennsylvania Dutch" accent including the story of her mother being thrown from a horse that shied from a Wolf. With her reputedly stong principles one wonders how she forgave her despondant husband when she caught him in bed with a 38 year old niece that was living with them in1900.
