Picture of Joseph Barr Sr.

Joseph Barr Sr. (son of <Unnamed>) was born Abt. 1760, and died 28 Dec 1818 in Pleasant Tws., Fairfield Co. OH. He married Catherine Shirk on 11 Apr 1779 in Shcoenck, Lancaster, PA, daughter of Ulrich Schurch and Anna Swarr.

Includes NotesNotes for Joseph Barr Sr.:
We suspect that Joseph was born in Pennsylvania sometime around 1760. He married Catherine Shirk in 1782 and had at least three children with her. On 8 Oct 1805 he recieved by letter a grant from the United States for a piece of property in Pleasant Township, Fairfield County, Ohio (West half of Range 18, Township 15, Section 34). This letter was never filed with the county recorder but was referred to in susiquinte land records. Letters that were filed around that date and area were signed by Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States. On 10 Mar 1807 Joseph subdivided this property between his two sons Joseph Jr., David and his son-in-law Martin Lantz (to be passed on to the heirs of his deceased daughter Catherine). It is alledged that there was a second daughter Ann, but no sources have been found to confirm or deni this. From inventory records in his probate we know that Joseph was fairly well to do for the time and he did business in Chambersburg Pa. before comming to Ohio.

Per his will David Barr became administrator of Joseph's estate on 29 Dec 1818 after his death. His personal property was put up at public auction and sold, most of it to family members. David Barr died before Joseph's estate was final and John Collins became administrator on 29 Dec 1824. No grave site has been located for Joseph, his wife or his daughter. I would suspect that they were buried in a family site or in Applegate Cemetery where David was buried. Applegate Cemetery Is located just off of the Southwest side of what was Joseph Barrs property. We suspect that Joseph was born in Pennsylvania sometime around 1760. He married Catherine Shirk in 1782 and had at least three children with her.
