 Includes NotesNotes for Andrew BARBERIE:
Andrew may have started his legal career in Sussex or possibly in Moncton. Andrew was an executor of William T. Miller's will dated Sept 7, 1832 in Bathurst, Gloucester Co., NB and he had purchased property in Bathurst prior to Nov., 1828. He owned 4 lots: 3 on St. Andrews St. between Murray and Kings and 1large piece of property between St. John and St. Patrick Streets. In 1836, he still owned these properties. It is interesting to note that William Pallen, my maternal g-g-g-grandfather and Andrew, my paternal g-g-grandfather had property across the street from one another during this period. Therefore Andrew had moved to Dalhousie prior to this period. In Jan. 1837, a petition was signed by 195 inhabitants of Restigouche, NB and sent to Fredericton, the provincial capital asking for the division of Restigouche and Gloucester counties. The counties were divided in early 1838. Andrew Barberie received two of the civil appointments for Restigouche Co.: 1) Keeper of the Rolls and Clerk of the Peace and Inferior Court of Common Pleas 2) Register of Deeds and Wills (a position he held until death). Source: From the newspaper "The Gleaner". At the first election for the House of Assembly for the newly created County of Restigouche, Andrew was elected as their first member by acclamation in Nov, 1838. Re-elected at the General Election's of 1842, 1846, 1850 and at a bye election in June 1851 made necessary by his acceptance of office and sat as a member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1854. He did not run for re-election in 1854 but was again re-elected at the General Election of 1856 and sat that short Legislature. He was defeated in 1857 and again in 1865 and retired into private life. Andrew spoke English and French. In 1839 he was a Captain and the Adjutant in the County of Restigouche Militia and in 1847 gazetted a Major. Source: Prov. of NB: Militia List for 1867. National Library of Canada: Parliamentary Sessional Papers, 1868, No. 35, p. 58.
He died at his residence, Claremont in 1891? in Dalhousie, NB.
