Updated July 18, 2002

I am looking for anyone with the surname Barberie. Jean Barberie, a French Huguenot left France in 1685, stayed 3 years in London, England when he obtained denization and then immigrated to NY, NY. He purchased property in New Rochelle, NY and spent at least a few years there. Some of his descendants moved to NJ (early 1700's). At the end of the American Revolution
John & Oliver Barberie settled in New Brunswick, Canada (Oliver went to England in 1787 and stayed--his grandson, John Barberie {1828-1899}returned to the USA in 1872). One descendant of Jean Barberie immigrated to Australia from Canada in the mid 1800's.
The name Barberie has also been spelled Barbarie, de Barberie and Barbery. Jean Barberie was probably born in Nevers, France in what was called Barberie Castle but Cardinal Marazin burnt it to the ground on July 11, 1659 because it was a meeting place for Huguenots.
