Notes for R
OBERT L. DAVIS:
As hand written by great grandson John R. Davis:

In writing this about the Davis Generation it is not complete noe do I see any hopes of it ever being complete. I am quoting some from the book of A.B. Wright. He was a Methodist preacher. A.B. lived at jamestown, then at Sunbright, at our old home place. He rode a horse all over Fentress, Clay, Scott, Morgan, and Cumberland Counties. He gave names of those he saved, married, and those he preached their funerals. Some of this came from tombstones from various graveyards. Some was told to me, and some I found on record at Wartburg. I have visted twenty seven graveyards. Some have been forgotten for years, bushes and trees have grown up threw the graves. The Davis graveyard on White Oak is in bad shape. The fourth generation of the Davis family. We are all getting age on us.Will the fifth generation look after the graveyard on White Oak??? If not it will grow up.

In 1810 the first account I had of great grandpa Robert L. Davis. This was the land of virgin timber, big white oaks, pine, beech, popular, and the likes. Plenty of game, fish. White Oak Creek was full of fish and it stayed that way untill 1928. At that time the white oak on the mountain was cut for stave timber to make barrells. A flash flood hit on white oak and washed and filled up the creek.

Morgan County belonged to Roane County untill the year 1818. That is when Morgan was formed and it went all the way to the Ky. line. There were only 8 districts then, now there are 12.

Scott County was formed out of Morgan County in the year 1848

Our greatgrandfather Robert L. Davis
Grandpa was borned in the state of S.C. in the year of 1794. He with three or four of his brothers came to what is now Morgan County in 1810. His brothers were: John Bunion, Welk, James(Jim), and plesant. John and Welk settled in Glenmary, Jim west of Lancing, and Pleasent around Glades. At one time Grandpa had some land at Rugby, 50 acres. That is where I first find any land entry, #19, of him. In 1820 I find that grandpa filed and got some grants or entry. Survey--#19 50 Acres, #21 50 Acres, #29 50 Acres, # 751- 50 acres,# 1003- 30acres, # 1984- 400 acres,# 275- 50 acres. Total 680 acres.

He fought in the War of 1812. He went to Nashville with John C. Barnes, father Tarrell Barnes and they both fought in the Battle of New Orleans. While out on patrol with six other men they met a british patrol. They had to swim Lake Ponchatrain and three men drowned.

In 1830 he married a Sarah Whilhite. She was born in 1806. In this state nothing is known about her, except one sister Rachel-Census of 1860 shows grandma 54 years old, and Rachel 47.

Grandpa buitl his home just back of the Jones Davis home on White Oak Creek, East of the town of Sunbright. There is where he raised his family. Had a log cabin with hewed and pegged logs for a floor.

A.B. Wright in his book said" A cook stove back then was a luxury" Most of the settlers cooked over the fire in the fire place. They would have to go to Kingston, Tn or Burnside Ky. to get supplies, such as salt. I have heard of a "salt lick" where they got salt for their cattle.

There was no doctor in that settlement in those days. Home remedy was all they could go by. Diptheria, Lock Jaw, Whooping Cough, Measles, Typhoid Fever and the likes really took it's toll. Shots were unheard of until 1923 and that was for Diptheria.

This is the ending of the Robert L Davis ans wife Sarah family except Luke Davis, daughter Anna, who is 78 years old now. Rufus Davis died in the 1860's so he has been dead one hundred years.

Grandpa Robert and grandma Sarah died in the 1870's so they soon will be dead a hundred years; and as far as I know the rest died after 1900.

Now I want to show Grandpa John Davis Sr. and wife Mobella Davis family and etc. Let's remember we are still living in the days of oxen and horse and buggy. No kerosene lamps at this time in this section of the country. They would read by beef tallow made into a candle or by the light of the fireplace or pine knot.

Grandpa was born and raised on White Oak Creek, east of Sunbright. Nothing is known of his early boyhood days. In the year of 1860 he married Maggie Mobella Duncan. At that time his personel property was worth $250.00. In 1870 his personal property was worth $500.00.

During the Civil War grandpa decided to join the union army. Over on the Henry Mountain, Grandpa, was crawling through a rail fence on his way to Huntsville to join up, when a union solider shot him in the hip.
Grandpa crawled off and hid in some bushes. He liked to have died before somone came along. That wound always gave him trouble as he never would let the bullet be taken out.
