Bernard and Charlotte Kirchner

Bernard and Charlotte Kirchner
On December 23, 1863, Mr. Kirchner was united in marriage to Miss Charlotte Lenz, who was also a native of Germany, a daughter of Valentine and Barbara (GEIS) Lenz. The family came to America in 1856, and settled upon a farm in Muscatine County, which Mr. Lenz cultivated until the death of his wife, which occurred in 1874. Charlotte came to U.S. in 1857 with her parents aboard the ship "Palestine". It was a hard trip. During the voyage the ship caught fire twice and provisions ran short so short that they were without food for three days. They landed in New York on May 10, 1857 and went directly to Rock Island County, ILL. where they obtained work for fifty cents a day. They settled in Buffalo Prairie, ILL and later moved to a farm near Nichols. At age eleven she was confirmed in the Protestant Evangelical Church. She spent her time as a housewife in Nichols, IA.
