William Barnes (son of John Barnes and Sarah Emery) was born 1790 in Little Barford, Bedfordshire, and died date unknown.
Notes for William Barnes: In 1819 William stole a coat, waistcoat and a pair of leather breeches in Keysoe Bedfordshire and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. This would have been to Australia. He was moved to the "Justitia Hulk" at Woolwich on 03/11/1819 and this is where I am with my research so far. I do not know whether he was actually transported yet and will have to go to Kew to look through the hulk records. He may have spent his whole sentence at Woolwich if he actually survived it. The conditions on the hulks were horrific. The evidence sheet is an abridged version. I have read the original documents of the evidence and verdict and there is a lot more information there. I will return to Bedford Archives and photograph them ASAP. He used the alias Emery which was his mothers maiden name and moved around a lot. He had recently been in Croxton in Cambridgeshire. When arrested he was living at Little Barford. Because he moved around a lot I will be looking at Keysoe and Croxton to see if there was a marriage somewhere.
