Berlin to Barlean, My family's trip through the years. In 1738 the three young Berlin brothers climbed off the ship Charming Nancy in Philadelphia, having just survived an ordeal of monumental proportion. Their trip to America saw most of their fellow passengers including their mother and father go to their graves from a ravaging disease. These three young men, Johann Abraham Berlin, Johann Jacob Berlin, and our direct ancestor George Fredrich Berlin were about to embark on a journey that would eventually lead to our family history in Nebraska. Over the years the spelling has changed from Berlin to Barlien and again to Barleen and Barlean. I have no proof but assume it was from a strong German tongue. I believe the correct pronunciation is Bear Lean but it is usually pronounced Bar Lean around here. Steve Barlean |
