| I am researching Bastasic (Bastašiæ)and Grba familyes from former Yugoslavia, mainly from West Slavonia, Grubisno Polje (Grubišno Polje) and Veliki Zdenci. Genetic material which one receives once conceived, is a code that we do not control, however it defines our psycho-physical structure at most. This code is a synthesis of a numerous genetic codes from our ancestors. We can gain a better understanding of ourselves by acquiring a thorough knowledge of physical and mental status, as well as educational level and other facts in lives of our ancestors. Even though time and surrounding that we live in play an important part, genotype is the key element, which has not been understood completely. Gaining a better understanding of myself is not the only reason for starting this project. My grandmother Sofia is one of the key elements that helped me start and awaken my passion for the past historical family events. Sitting right next to her sick bed and listening to her stories, I floated away to my carefree childhood days at Grubisino Polje. I felt that the moving images of people and the place, even sounds and smells still live within me. I realized than, that many of these wonderful people who made my childhood days worth remembering are not alive anymore. Their names are mentioned rarely now, at some funeral or wedding, or when the calendar shows a particular sad date that has to be remembered. There have been too many such sad days throughout the history of my family. Talking to my grandmother, I felt ashamed that I knew almost nothing about the history of my family or my birth place. Our irresponsibility can be hardly justified. We are irresponsible to ourselves, our ancestors, succeeding generations and history in general, if we allow peoples lives, characters, names and places to be forgotten and fade away. I have realized that my grandmother is a never-ending treasury of memories, stories and facts, that she is a person with an enormous life experience. I started taking notes, taping, photographing, scanning, collecting old pictures, sending mail, visiting libraries and archives, reading. I came to a conclusion soon that it is impossible to work on family history without knowing or understanding history of place, people and church the family belonged to. With my grandmother’s and mother’s help a lot of work has been done up until now. A lot of people were willing to help me, and that number is growing by the day. I receive calls and mails from Europe, Canada, USA… I have decided to acquaint myself and include in my family tree all the families that my family interrelated with and their families as well. In general, these are families from West Slavonija (Republic of Croatia), and more precisely from Grubisno Polje, Veliki and Mali Zdenci, Orlovac, Donja Kovacica, Velika Pisanica, Velika Peratovica, Bedenik, Velika and Mala Barna, Rasenica, Gakovo, Djakovac and Veliki Grdjevac. In addition to the information and pictures on these web pages, I own a lot of other pictures and materials. I would be glad to forward or exchange what I already have. I ask all those who can in any way help me with expansion of my family tree, to please do so. |
