Descendants of JOHN BASKIN

Generation No. 4

18. CATHERINE4 BASKINS (JAMES3, JOHN2, JOHN1 BASKIN) was born 1744, and died 1794 in WILKES CO., GEORGIA. She married ALEXANDER STEPHENS 1766. He was born 1727 in LEIGHT, SCOTLAND, and died March 15, 1814 in TALIAFERRO CO., GEORGIA.

Notes for ALEXANDER STEPHENS:
He was the first Stephens in the New World who was a direct ancestor of our family. This Alexander Stephens came to the New World from Leigth Scotland, near the port of Edinburgh. The records of where this Alexander was born are not complete, but in all likelihood it was somewhere in Scotland. While in Scotland, he worked along the water front in Leigth in the Saint Andrews District of Militia. Alexander R is recorded as a Scottish rebel that participated in trying to overthrow King George II of Great Britain. Alexander is listed as a "porter or throne" supporting Charles Edward Stuart "The Pretender."
King George II put a price on the head of everyone who had a part in this revolt. The report listed Alexander as the Scottish rebel with the name being spelled Alex'Stiven, Alex.Steven. There are many different spellings for the last name of Stephens. The original spelling was most probably Stephen. This was pronounced Steen in the region of Scotland that Alexander lived. The spelling that we use also appears in the records. The version with the (s) at the end of the name is an English spelling. The spelling without the (s) is a Scottish spelling. Some of the records say that Alexander changed the spelling to mislead the King's authority's others say that the various spellings are due to the manner of record keeping at this time. Alexander came to the New World as a result of the price on his head in Great Britain. One report says that he was given a conditional pardon by the King. He could leave Great Britain or face death. The other report says that he left before he could be put to death. Ether versions could be true.
He arrived in the New World (America) and settled in or near Paxton, Pennsylvania. He worked as an Indian trader along the river near Paxton. The settlement of Paxton was an Irish settlement. It was here that Alexander met and married an Irish girl by the name of Catherine Baskin. Catherine's family operated a ferry on the river near Paxton. Alexander was not a person of wealth nor was he well respected because of his occupation and his past. This lead to Catharine's father to disinherit her for marrying Alexander. The area of Paxton is now Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
Alexander is thought to have served under the British General
Braddock during the French and Indian Wars sometime in or around the year 1755. Alexander had worked with the local Indians as a Trader and knew the land very well. This allowed him to be a valuable scout for the British troops. It was not long before these traits were used against the British during the American Revolution (1775 - 1783)
Alexander reached the rank of Captain in the Colonial Army, in the North
Cumberland company. He received a total of seven pounds for his services.
Sometime after the American Revolution, Alexander moved to Warren County, Georgia. Alexander Baskins Stephens who was the youngest son of Alexander and Catherine bought the first home that the Stephens family owned in the New World. This home later became known as Liberty Hall.
Near the grounds of Liberty Hall there is a family cemetery which contains the graves of several of our early ancestors including this Alexander.
His tombstone has the following inscription:
"In the memory of Alexander Stephens. He died March 15th 1813. Aged
87 years lacking 2 days, born in England, He emigrated to Pennsylvania
early in life, and was Captain in the first War for the Sovereign
Rights of local self Government on the part of the People's of the
Several States of this Continent."
This inscription contains several errors, the date of death does not
agree with the majority of the records. The place of birth should
have read United Kingdom. It is not clear how these errors occurred.
