Notes for S
AMUEL CONWAY:
Samuel Conway was born 25 Jul 1799, and when he was 12 years old, in 1811, the infamous earthquake along the New Madrid fault caused "houses in the vicinity of his home (to be) knocked down and the whole country shook from the shock of the quivers that tore the earth asunder and formed Reelfoot Lake in western Tennessee." (Quote from a paper given by Virginia Walton Brooks (Mrs. Berry B., Jr.) at an April (year unknown) meeting of the Memphis Genealogical Society.

Samuel Conway married 28 Oct 1824 Mourning Baxter, born 17 Jan 1804 in Madison County, Kentucky. Her parents, Green Berry and Elizabeth (Jones) Baxter, came to the Territory of Missouri from Madison County, Kentucky between 1810 and 1814. They were parents of nine children.

Samuel Conway and his brother, Joseph, both served as sheriff of St. Louis County at different intervals. Samuel Conway sat on the bench of the St. Louis county Court, held a seat in the General Assembly of Missouri, and was a Deacon in Bonhomme Presbyterian Church, founded by his father and uncle.

During the War between the States, a family story relates that Samuel Conway had the keys to the Bonhomme Church and refused to allow the Yankee soldiers in to conduct worship services. The soldiers threatened to shoot Mr. Conway.

Samuel Conway died of typhoid fever in the only illness of his life. He lived out his life on his father's original land grant in Bonhomme District, at Chesterfield, in the Creve Coeur Lake Settlement, St. Louis County, Missouri, where he was born. He was in his 68th year.

In her talk before the Memphis Genealogical Society, descendant Virginia Walton Brooks cites the following sources for information on this family:

Draper Manuscripts, 24S 160-1; 169-176; 18S 113-115; 11S 15-16; 10S 81-83; 29J 25; 29J 18; 26J 12; 24, pp. 151-204.

A History of Missouri, by Louis Houck, 1908, Vol. 2, pp. 72-73; Vol. 3, pp. 85, 86, 107.

Letters of Henry Clay Ogle, Paris Kentucky, 1903 and 1912. (She notes that he is the only source that states John Conway was the immigrant from Dublin, Ireland, a Latin scholar and school teacher.)

Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1929, L. P. Summers, p. 718

Lost Links, Francis & Moore, pp. 169-178, 410.

At the time of her talk, which occurred about 1963, Virginia Walton Brooks lived at Epping Forest Manor, 3661 James Road, Memphis, Tennessee. She notes that at this time, Mrs. Julia S. Ardery, a research of Paris, Kentucky, questioned the immigration of John Conway, and rather believed that he was a relative of Edwin Conway of Northampton County, VA, and probably an uncle of Miles Withers Conway and brother of Thomas C. Conway.

Additional information on the descendents of this family comes from "Some Maryland Baxters & Their Descendants," Humphries, p. 41-2, 74-5.
