Mary Jane made application for widow's pension in 1878 from Leavenworth, Kansas on the service of her husband under Capt. William Matson. The company was formed by Capt. William Ellis who died in service and service records appear to be found under Capt. Ellis, and not under Capt. Matson.

Reuben Underwood was born 17 Mar 1798 in Nicholas County, KY. Married in Bracken County, KY 5 Dec 1822 to Margaret Dawson, a sister of John Dawson (there is a bio of him in same book). Lived for some time in Harrison County, KY then moved with four children to Illinois, arriving in the fall of 1833 in what is now Mechanicsburg Township. (lists 5 children). Reuben died 10 Feb 1844, and his widow died 9 Jan 1875, both at the homestead where they settled in 1833. Reuben's widowed mother came to live with him, he being the only child. Her name was Sarah Conway. (Continues to tell of Ruddle's and Sarah's capture and ransom.) She died 19 Sep 1845 at her son's residence, at about age 73.
