Notes for H
ARRISON GROUND:
In his will, Robert Ground left his farm to his youngest son, Harrison. He was to care for his mother and sisters as long as they lived. He wanted to go to Texas, so he gave the farm and responsibilities to his brother William. He went first to Warren County, Illinois, where his name is recorded on an undated tax record in Coldbrook Township, where he had other relatives.

In 1920, Mamie Ground Hays corresponded with her cousins, Ben and Tom Goodnight, of Roscoe, Texas, and they stated that they recalled Harrison had married the daughter of a Giles Wilson before the war between the states. Ben and Tom also recalled that Harrison and his wife had one child who died before they left Texas.

The following land records were found by Beth Ellison of Pasadena, Texas.

Robert Grounds of Dallas County, Texas, to Harrison Ground of Ellis County, Texas. 80 acres for the consideration of $40 in hand paid. Acreage on the waters of Mountain Creek in Ellis County, Texas. Extract from letter received from "Grandfather Goodnight" (Isaac Goodnight in Kentucky) to Isaac S. Goodnight in Texas includes a message for Harrison Ground:

3 May 1858: "I have heard that you have got quite young again so you can pass for one of your brother's sons. That certainly you must look out and take a wife or do as Henry Goodnight wants to do, take a Kentucky girl. You can come back and see them and take them back to Texas, though the girls are almost out of heart looking for you. They fear you look so pretty the girls in Texas won't let you come back from there single. If you have promised them to come back and marry them, then do so. No more of that nonsense."

(Extracts of letters copied by Ben F. Goodnight and sent to Mamie Ground Hays in 1939 reprinted in Ground-Grounds Family Association Newsletter January 1992, Volume VIII, No. 3, p. 5.)

45. THOMAS HARRISON4 SMITH (ELIZABETH3 CONWAY, SAMUEL2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1810 in See Notes!!!, and died 1851 in d of cholera. He married (1) SARAH TOMLIN Abt. 1842 in see notes at Thomas Harrison Smith, daughter of CHRISTIAN TOMLIN. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown. He married (2) SARAH CLEMENTS Unknown in prob Pendleton Co, KY. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown in d of cholera.

Notes for T
HOMAS HARRISON SMITH:
Original notes say that Thomas married Sarah Clements 3 Oct 1825, and that she died in 1820 of cholera. Then Thomas married second 3 Nov 1825. There is a obviously a problem with these dates. Thomas and Sarah were to have had four children, the only birth date known of these children is 1835.

Thomas' parents were not married until 1808, so it seems unlikely that he would have been married, lost a wife, and remarried by the age of 15 or 16.

Secondly, the first wife's death is before the marriage by five years; and the second marriage follows the first marriage by one month.

He was to have been married by Rev. Christian Tomlin, father of his second wife, both times.

To further complicate matters, original notes show the son William married to Evaline Daugherty, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth (Overby) Daugherty. Since later information shows that Evaline was born in 1812, this does not seem likely. Children attributed to the couple, which may someday be figured out, are: Henry, Mary, Eliza, and Joseph.

Notes for S
ARAH CLEMENTS:
Original notes say that Sarah Clements died in 1820 of cholera and that he married second 3 Nov 1825. There is a obviously a problem with these dates.
