Descendants of John Conway - June 24, 2003

122. MARY PHOEBE5 BECKHAM (MARGARET4 GROUND, RHODA CONWAY3 LONG, MARY2 CONWAY, JOHN1) was born 1847 in Warren or Barren County, KY, and died 1927 in Greenwood Co, KS. She married WILLIAM VAUGHN 1871 in Barren Co, KY. He was born 1848 in Warren Co, KY, and died 1889 in Greenwood Co, KS.

Notes for M
ARY PHOEBE BECKHAM:
Barbara Jean Hathcock gives the first name as well as death date and location. I knew only that she had gone to Kansas in 1880. She also gives birth and death date for William Vaughn.

In Barbara Jean's notes is an article from "The History of Greenwood County, Kansas." While there is no publishing information given, the article ends with "Submitted by Granddaughters Erma Gould and Mary Hoobler." The article, summarized, says:

William and Mary Phebe Vaught left Barren County, Kentucky in a covered wagon in the Fall of 1872. Their son Emmet was 6 weeks old. They arrived in Humboldt, Kansas with a sick child and 35 cents in cash. They spent their money for medicine and pressed on to Piedmont, where they had Pedigo and Beckham relatives.

The couple had been members of Disciples of Christ church and joined the Piedmont Christian church when it organized in the late 1800s. They homesteaded about 1-1/2 miles south of Piedmont on what became known as Guffy Farm. Seven more children were born here.

William Vaughn died of a ruptured appendix, and two of the children, John and Glenn, died of measles and croup. Mary Phebe decided to make a go of the farm. She experienced many hardships, including poor crops, one barn destroyed by fire and another by tornado. Son Emmet took up carpentry to supplement their income and built many houses in the Piedmont area.

In 1906, Mary Phebe sold the farm and moved to Piedmont and built a house two blocks east of the Methodist Church.

Son Guy went to Wichita Barber School and returned to Piedmont to practice his trade there. Later he purchased the shop from Roy Simpson and operated it for over 50 years.

Notes for N
ATHANIEL BECKHAM:
Barbara Jean Hathcock gives the death location. I knew only that Nathaniel had gone to Kansas in 1880 with the rest of the family and had ended up in Oklahoma. She also supplies dates for Clary and the names and dates for all their children except Orlie.

In Barbara Jean's outline, this family has a different entry appearance than the rest, and contain identification numbers. It appears that at least this family comes from one source that is different, but she does not give the source, other than to cite James Heidelbaugh:

"According to James, Nataniel Beckham came to Kansas from Kentucky about the same time his mother Margaret (Ground) Beckham came from Texas. He made the run when the Cherokee Strip was opened and was fortunate in establishing his claim to 160 acres of good farm land four miles north of the present town of Lamont, Oklahoma."

On the 1880 US Census, Nathaniel is living in District 8, Glasgow Junction, Barren County, Kentucky.

In 1900, he is living in Lamont Township, Grant County, Oklahoma. By 1910, he is living in Major County, Oklahoma and also in 1920. Barbara Jean does not give the details of the census.

Notes for W
ILLIAM G. BECKHAM:
Barbara Jean Hathcock gives the middle initial as well as death date and location. I knew that William had gone with the rest of the family in 1880 to Kansas, but did not know that like his brother, Nathaniel, he had gone on to Oklahoma.

She also adds information on the marriages and children (I had only "Bee" and one child, Bess).

Her notes indicate that William G. Beckham worked as a carpenter and painter. In 1904 he moved to Oklahoma, when Lamont was a thriving town of 650. Many new homes and bars were being built. There were three carpenters and two lumber yards in the town, and all wer busy. William agreed with the town's existing carpenters to do only painting and paper hanging.

Notes for C
ONSTANTINE ABLE TALLEY:
Barbara Jean Hathcock notes that the father of Constantine is not really proven. She cites me as her source of information as well as James Heidelbaugh. She shows the following US Census sketches:

1860 - Barren County, KY
Division 1, p. 346
Talley, William

1860 - Barren County, KY
Glasgow, p. 922
Talley, Clard and Constant

Glasgow Junction Precinct, p. 627
Tally, Copnstantinable

p. 627
Tally Marinda

p. 607

James Heidelbaugh gives the following information:

Constantine Abel Talley Jr. is listed in the 1900 US Census living in Twin Groves Township, Greenwood County, Kansas, and in the 1910 US Census in Lamont, Grant County, Oklahoma. Bettie Talley is listed in the 1910 and 1920 US Census living in Greenwood County, Kansas.
