Notes for ANDREW JACKSON POE: Andrew Jackson Poe served in the U.S. Army in France during World War I. In a letter to his father, published in the newspaper in January 1919, he said, "We arrived at Brest, France, Aug. 12th, after 12 days of exciting journey over the waves. Were attacked by 8 subs and saw much fighting. Sank 2 of them, but they came near getting us. They later attacked a freighter and damaged it...there were 7 ships of us in the convoy; 1 ship had 3800 passengers and the others a like amount...We ran into a 2 day storm and sure was some rough water, often coming into our rooms..lone man was lost overboard one night and never was found...(upon arriving at Brest) We slept in pup tents, had only 1 blanket for cover and almost froze to death...." Written from Headquarters, 111th Ammunition, A.E.F. via New York. A. J. Poe lived in a small house about 3 miles from Mansfield on Highway 157. He never married. In the early 1960s, A.J. Poe became interested in family history and several letters survive which chronicle his efforts. He died November 20, 1964, leaving as heirs his step-brothers and sister, Henderson Poe, Sue Poe Leath, and William Silas Poe, Jr. to inherit 220 acres of property in Tarrant County, Texas, and deposits in the Mansfield Bank of $16,909, and household furniture. |
