Notes for M
ARY MAHALA GROUND:
Mahala Ground attended Liberty School in Archer County, Texas, as a child. She attended Texas Normal in Denton, Texas, to become a teacher. She also took a secretarial course.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Mahala and her husband, Carl Birchfield, homesteaded land near Roswell, New Mexico. They lived there long enough to finish the claim and to own it. Mahala became pregnant with Rosemary and because the land was so hard to farm and the nearest running water was in Roswell, 50 miles away, they decided to move to Alabama to work for the Birmingham Water Works Company. Carl's father, J. D. Birchfield, owned some stock in the company. He told his son if they would come back to Alabama, he would get him a position. Carl was from Clay County, Alabama and went out west after World War I to work in the oil fields. This is where Mahala and Carl met.

Mahala joined Mt. Carmel Baptist church in Cordova, Alabama before June 1933 and taught Sunday School there for about 40 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star and received her 50 year pin in 1987.

After the death of her husband, Mahala began teaching school at the old Indian Head school building. She taught the first grade for about 18 years. She taught about 8-10 of those years at the new building.

At the time of her death, Mahala was in the Cordova Health Care home for one month. The health care home is located on the site of the old Indian Head School. She died on the spot where she spent so many of her years teaching.

In 1932, they moved to Dora, Alabama, and then in 1933 to Cordova, Alabama, where Carl was employed by Birmingham Water Works as the Superintendent over Cordova, Dora, and Parish water plants.

Notes for H
ENRY LESTER GROUND:
The Archer Dispatch, Friday, November 21, 1913

Jud Ground was accidentally killed when a horse fell on him while he was rounding up and branding on the Waggoner ranch twenty miles southof Vernon last Saturday, November 15, 1913 and the body was interred in the cemetery here Monday afternoon. He is survived by a wife and one child.

For the past month Jud had been working for Waggoner in the vicinity of Vernon and on the fatal Saturday was assisting the other boys in rounding up and branding calves when a calf ran under his horse and threw it, the man, and the calf falling in one jumbled pile. In the fall, Jud was injured so badly that he was unconscious when the others came to him and aside from opening his eyes onec, he never showed any signs of regaining consciousness. The accident happened about two o'clock and he lived until that night. Covington of this place was working with him at the time and stayed all the time until the end.

His body was placed in a wagon and they started to Vernon with it Saturday night, but it rained so much that they had to stop and wait for daylight, arriving in Vernon about 9 a.m. Sunday morning. Arriving there the body was embalmed and prepared for shipment on the noon Denver train. Ed Turner, cowboss, and R. L. Moore, bookkeeper for the Waggoner ranch, paid all the expense incident to shipping the body to this place.

His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Ground and sister, Miss Mary Ground of Lelia Lake, and Mrs. J. S. Hayter and husband of Clarendon, had been notified and came to Vernon on the Denver and finding the body ready for shipment, came on with it from Vernon to this place. J. S. Melugin, Jud's brother-in-law, met them at Whichita Falls and escorted them to this city.

Funeral services were conducted at his residence here Monday at two p.m. by Rev. J. W. Beck and the order of the Woodmen of the World. Relatives present from other places were E. H. Dodson, an uncle, of Dodsonville, Rolla Fisher, a cousin, of Wellington, J. R. Blessing, Wellington, J. M. Hayter and wife, Megargtel, John Ground and family of the north side of the county.

Mrs. Lois Ground, the widow, and little daughter, Madeline, left Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Ground for their home at Lelia Lake where she will stay for some time.

Nothing that has happened in recent years has cast such a shadow of gloom ove the entire community as this sad accident. Jud was well and favorably known to almost every man in the county and his sudden demise made all the more difficult the task of losing his companionship. Perhaps all themore because of his close association with Mr. Melugin of the Dispatch force, our hearts go out in the tenderest sympathy for the bereaved wife and innocent daughter whose heart has yet to learn the sadness of the loss of a loving father.

May the choicest blessings of an all wise and ever kind Heavenly Father abide with them though this hour of sore trial and deep sorrow and guide, guard and comfort them so long as life itself shall last.
