  Notes for J. S. RHEA:
Maggie E. and J. S. Rhea are listed on the church register of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Rheatown, Tennessee.

James C. Donnelly's History of Rheatown, Tennessee:

Among the early settlers was JOHN RHEA who came 1783 to whom the town got its name. John Rhea also served on a committee in the organization State of Tennessee and writing the states constitution. John was in the Revolutionary War as a staff officer. Latter he was clerk of the North Carolina General assembly in 1771. In his term as clerk he had a new act enacted. The act covered the carving of Sullivan County out of Washington County. Washington Co. was named after the first president of the USA. He was elected to Congress with the help of Andrew Jackson, a personal friend. One of his was to get Rheatown a post office which he did in 1823.

In the records of the Rheatown Cemetery, notation by Maggie's name says she is wife of J. S. Rhea, after whom the town got its name. J. S. is more likely to be a son or grandson of John Rhea, who would have been born no later than 1750. Maggie was born in 1861.

vi.   JAMES OSCAR DUKES, b. Abt. 1864; d. Unknown.
  Notes for JAMES OSCAR DUKES:

On the church register of the Methodist Episcopal church in Rheatown, Tennessee is J. O. Dukes, Jr. The church itself was built in 1871. Might this mean a marriage and children for James O.?

vii.   EMILY DUKES, b. Aft. 1870; d. Unknown.
  Notes for EMILY DUKES:
Note that I cannot find source information on this child. The 1870 Census of Greene County, TN does not show her, but she could have been born after 1870. William's brother, Robert, is shown with an "Emeley" age 7 male born Tennessee on the same census. They lived fairly near each other (HH 65 and HH 75).

9. ELBERT SEVERE4 DUKES (JAMES BASIL3, ROBERT S.2, ..1) was born 29 Jun 1829 in "Eb" b. Rheatown, Greene Co, TN10, and died 10 May 1907 in Neosho, Lyon Co, KS11. He married MARY JANE KIRK12 16 Sep 1850 in Rheatown, Greene Co, TN13. She was born 04 Jan 1826 in TN-Parents b. VA, and died 12 Dec 1890 in Lyon Co, KS.

Notes for E
LBERT SEVERE DUKES:
Elbert Severe "Eb" Dukes was a saddler/shoemaker by trade, the trade of his grandfather, Robert S. Dukes.

He was born in Rheatown, Greene County, Tennessee, and by one account, moved to Kansas in 1875, where he resided in Salina 6 months, then moved to Hartford, Lyon County.

According to the records of the Methodist Episcopal church in Hartford, Kansas, Dukes lived in Everton, Missouri, and joined the Presbyterian church there in 1897. This same record indicates that he moved to Hartford in 1875.

Eb Dukes' obituary states that he was buried at Hartford Cemetery, but there is no headstone present. His wife, Mary Jane is buried in Lot 343 in this cemetery. The sexton records indicate no burial, and there is no funeral home listed. The same is true of his son, George, whose obituary states he is buried at Hartford Cemetery. According to Milo Sutton (Hermosa Beach CA), whose grandmother lived across the street, Elbert S. Dukes died at the home of his daughter Mary Ruth (Dukes) Rule. He adds that when Mary Ruth Rule died in 1938, the viewing was in her living room, and she was the first dead person he had ever seen.

Information on this family was also obtained from:
