Notes for M
ARTHA JANE MCCURRY:
Arleta Utterback writes, "My g grandmother, Mary Jane (sic) McCurry, known to her friends and family as Mattie, lived with us for long periods of time in her old age. Her husband, John MIlton Canaday, died December 4, 1919, and she lived until 1938. She stayed with each of her children for a period of time each year and since my mother was her oldest grandchild, she also lived with us on several occasions. We would ride the train to Maryville and bring her home with us. I remember her as being rather stern and very critical of the way my mother allowed me to behave. Particularly the fact that I went out of doors without a sunbonnet, and sometimes even my shoes. She thought tomatoes were poison, having grown them in her flower garden in Tennessee, and expected all of us to die in our sleep because we liked sliced tomatoes.

"There were certain things that she thought little girls should learn and she tried in vain to teach me to do patchwork and knit on 4 needles before I was old enough to go to school! It was not until I got into genealogy after I retired that I began to appreciate the stories she told me of life in Rheatown during the Civil War. If only I had written down all those stories that I expected to remember word for word."

Notes for J
AMES HENRY ERNST:
James Henry Ernst was a Methodist circuit rider, and he and his wife lived at Mound City, Missouri. Even though he was a minister, the family opposed the marriage because his father had emigrated from Germany. This was a family who was very proud of their Scotch/Irish/English heritage. He contracted typhoid fever on ministerial rounds and died 4 November 1871. He is buried in the home graveyard in Gentry County (Ernst Cemetery?).

Notes for M
ARY EMMA DUKES:
Mary Emma "Emmie" Dukes is the only child that Irene Spunde had record of for this couple. Others come from the 1850 census.

Irene's mother said that Mary Emma played piano and taught music when she was younger, went to dances and rode horseback, wore fancy hats and suits and was opinionated. She remembers her as being fair haired and fair skinned, possibly with blue eyes. At some point relatives visited from Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Virginia. Mary Emma attended the Methodist church and once remarked to Edith that their anscestors came from England. She had definite ideas and didn't tolerate lazy people.

She is supposed to have been married twice -- once to Mr. Bailey who fathered the first set of twins, and then to David Dukes. However, all the children resemble each other, and Irene thinks this may not be true.

Notes for D
AVID ALLISON DUKES:
David Allison Dukes is the great grandfather of Irene Spunde. She says that Alexander Dukes, father of David Allison Dukes, and Robert, brother of Alexander Dukes, are both her great great grandfathers because her great grandparents were first cousins. David went to live with this family after his father was incarcerated.

David and his brother Ed owned a wagon shop until Ed moved to Carnegie, Oklahoma. Thereafter, David was a supervisor at a wagon shop in Morristown. He wore suits to work with a derby hat and smoked cigars. He did have a sister (Irene's mother believes her name was Ida), and "possibly others."
