Descendants of Robert Dukes - June 24, 2003

46. NELLIE5 DUKES (CHARLES NELSON4, ROBERT SHERARD3, ROBERT S.2, ..1) was born 03 Apr 1882 in Carney, Vernon Co, MO, and died 16 Jun 1961 in Boise, Ada Co, ID. She married EUGENE E. MACOMB 27 Jun 1901 in VanWyck, Valley Co, ID36. He was born Bet. 1875 - 1885 in "Gene", and died Unknown.

Notes for N
ELLIE DUKES:
Ed Kutz says that Nellie died after 13 Feb 1954, but I'm not sure what the date reference is.

Shirley McCreath gives the birth of 3 Apr 1884 and death of 16 Jun 1961 and burial location. She has written beneath the information on the death, "Vernon County, Carney Missouri," but I believe this to be her place of birth, not her death. Shirley also says that Nellie had no children. It is possible that Katie died young.

She says that Nellie did raise two children, a girl and a boy, that were her husband's niece and nephew. The girl was Dressa, and the boy was Doc or Gene.

Child of N
ELLIE DUKES and EUGENE MACOMB is:
  i.   KATIE6 MACOMB, b. Private.

47. KATIE5 DUKES (CHARLES NELSON4, ROBERT SHERARD3, ROBERT S.2, ..1) was born 21 Jul 1889, and died 08 Dec 1955 in Boise, Ada Co, ID. She married F. A. COONROD Unknown, son of JOHN COONROD and NANCY ALDERSON. He was born 06 Mar 1882 in Cherokee Co, KS, and died Unknown.

Notes for K
ATIE DUKES:
Jane Penrod: "My mother calls them Uncle F. and Aunt Kate. She has a black cow hide coat that Uncle F. had made for Aunt Kate for their wedding. (It's quite a work of art.) She also remembers Kate's sister (I forget her name).

"Of their children, John used to work here in Boise, and I've tried to call him on the phone but didn't have any luck. Miles' wife is still alive and lives in Spokane. I guess she had called my mother not too long ago. I don't have my family tree hardware on the computer yet--but when I do--I'll try and get back to you. I also think I have some real old pictures of "Aunt Kate." My mother has mycular degeneration now and it is hard for her to identify some of her old pictures--but she remembers well.

"I also remember seeing grave stones of the Dukes family either at the cemetery in McCall or perhaps it was at Crown Point in Cascade. When we get ahold of Miles' wife, she can probably help as to where they are buried."

Katie Dukes Coonrod was living with her son, Bud, 13 Feb 1954, in McCall, Idaho. He had lost his wife on 8 Feb 1953.

Shirley McCreath provides complete dates of birth and deathas well as burial location, which she gives in the notation "Cloverdale F. H." (funeral home), which I take to mean that is where she is buried.

Notes for F
. A. COONROD:
Information on this family comes from Jane Penrod, Boise, Idaho, a descendant.

Notes for W
AYNE WALLACE WARD:
Wayne Ward was working at Stibinte, Idaho, in 1952. Details on this family come from Shirley Lenore Ward McCreath in December 2000. Previous to hearing from her, I had her listed as Patricia Lee (source unknown).

Shirley gives the date of birth and location.

50. JOHN AMBROSE ELLIS5 KNIGHT, JR. (HENRIETTA4 MERCER, HENRIETTA3 DUKES, ROBERT S.2, ..1) was born 21 Sep 1866 in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma)37, and died 08 Aug 1927 in Flying E Ranch, Jal, Lea Co, NM38. She was born 29 Dec 1872 in Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto Co, TX40, and died 01 Oct 1952 in 79y 9m 2d, Hogan-Malone Hospital, Big Spring, Howard Co, TX.

Notes for J
OHN AMBROSE ELLIS KNIGHT, JR.:
The Jal-Cooper Cemetery is located 7 miles north of the town of Jal, New Mexico, on State Highway 18.

Notes for M
ARY LILLIE MCQUERRY:
Lillie McQuerry Knight died of pneumonia and a kidney ailment. Iva Lee Calley Riggs lists her as Lillie Mary McQuerry, but the McQuerry Bible records list Mary Lillie at the birth and marriage. The J. A. E. Knight Bible marriage entry lists Lillie M. McQuerry.

Marriage Notes for J
OHN KNIGHT and MARY MCQUERRY:
The marriage is also recorded in the James Ambrose Ellis Knight Jr. Bible on the opening page: "This Certifies That the Rite of Holy Matrimony was Celebrated Between Mr. J. A. E. Knight Jr. of Palo Pinto, Texas and Miss Lieeie McQuerry of Palo Pinto, Texas, on 23rd of October 1890 at Palo Pinto, Texas by Rev. W. E. Shine assisted by Rev. W. L. Harris. Witness J. L. Cunningham, Wm. (L?) Billing."

Children of J
OHN KNIGHT and MARY MCQUERRY are:
  i.   JOHN AMBROSE ELLIS6 KNIGHT, b. 16 Sep 1891, 5 miles south of Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto Co, TX41; d. 18 Apr 1940, Kermit, Winkler Co, TX or Ector Co, TX; m. BERTHA MAE WEBB, 1926, Midland Co, TX (no children)42; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.
Notes for JOHN AMBROSE ELLIS KNIGHT:
In most of the Bible entries he is listed as "J. A. Ellis Knight" but on the addendum page to Cecily A. Ellis Knight's Bible is an entry "J. Ambrose Ellis Knight, son of John Ambrose Ellis Knight Jr. was born Sept 16th (Thursday?) (7/9?) o'clock PM 1891."

A family group sheet provided by Iva Lee Calley Riggs adds "John" to complete the name.

J. A. Ellis Knight died in an automobile accident en route to Jal, New Mexico. A Bible record addendum indicates that the death occurred in "Kermet" (Kermit), but the family group sheet provided by Iva Calley Riggs shows that the death occured on Texas Highway 302 in Ector County, Texas.

ii.   JAMES FRANKLIN KNIGHT, b. 29 Mar 1894, 5 miles south of Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto Co, TX43; d. 11 Oct 1944, Kermit, Winkler Co, TX44; m. TOM ROSS, 29 Aug 1938, Lovington, Lea Co, NM (no children)45; b. Unknown, (a nickname?); d. Unknown, Lived at Quemado, Catron Co, NM.
  Notes for JAMES FRANKLIN KNIGHT:
In most of the Bible records James is listed "James Frank Knight" but in an addendum to Cecily Ellie Knight's Bible is an entry, "James Franklin, Born March 29th Thursday 4 o'clock (AM?) 1894."

Iva Lee Calley Riggs notes on a family group sheet that James Frank died in Jal, New Mexico, which is not borne out by the obituary below. She notes that he died of pneumonia and alcoholism.

Undated obituary:

James Knight Died in Kermit

Word was received here Monday of the death of James Frank Knight, pioneer rancher and oil man of Lea County, New Mexico. He was a native of Palo Pinto County. Mr. Knight died in a Kermit hospital.

The son of the late J. E. A. Knight and Mrs. Lillie Knight, he moved with his parents to Winkler in 1900 about the time the county was organized. He spent his entire life in West Texas and New Mexico.

His family helped to organize Lea County and Andrews County, Texas. Mr. Knight worked on several large ranches when a young man and later managed both his own and his mother's ranches. He was interested in Lea County oil development and was a member of the Jal school board.

Surviving are the widow; two foster sons, Ross and Bennett Easterling; and his mother, all of Jal; four sisters, Mrs. E. R. Dunn, Andrews; Mrs. John Albert, Roswell, N.M., and Mrs. J. H. Black and Mrs. L. J. Calley, both of Jal.

Services and burial were in Jal Friday, with Rev. L. A. Hughes of Jal, Lt. Jeanie L. Burke Jr., of the Navy, and Rev. G. L. Keever of Austin officiating.

  Notes for TOM ROSS:
This name is listed on Iva Calley Riggs' family group sheet as "Tom ROSS Easterling" leading to the assumption that Ross was her maiden name and Easterling was a previous marriage. Later, on a family group sheet, this was found to be the case.

iii.   LILLIE MAY KNIGHT, b. 16 Apr 1896, Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto Co, TX46; d. 29 Oct 1979, Andrews County Hospital, Andrews Co, TX47; m. EARL RICE DUNN, 10 May 1914, (no children)48; b. Unknown, of Andrews Co, TX; d. Unknown.
iv.   ANN ETTA KNIGHT, b. 26 Jan 1899, Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto Co, TX49; d. 21 Feb 1987, Jal, Lea Co, NM50; m. JAMES HARVEY BLACK, 10 Feb 1917, Monahans, Ward Co, TX (no children); b. 26 Aug 1888; d. 04 Dec 1950.
  Notes for JAMES HARVEY BLACK:
Date of death on the family group sheet provided by Iva Calley Riggs has been scratched over. It appears that the original date recorded may have been 14 December, but the first digit has been changed or scratched out.

  v.   GEORGE MERCER KNIGHT, b. 30 Nov 1903, Midland, Midland Co, TX51; d. 04 May 1905, drowned; Merkel, Taylor Co, TX.
95. vi.   BLANCHE KNIGHT, b. 14 Oct 1905, Merkel, Taylor Co, TX; d. 18 Jun 1974, Ector County Hospital, Odessa, Ector Co, TX.
