Notes for I
DA LEONORA DUKES:
"The Story of a Life-Long Resident of Pleasant Hill", by HFG (edited in pencil by Ida Kutz on a copy of the original):

"On July 4, 1980, Ida (Dukes) Kutz was signally honored by the 4th of July Commission in the Pleasant Hill Park. She was presented with a beautifully-engraved silver plate, testifying that'she is the longest-time resident of Pleasant Hill -- 1908 to 1980!

"In the early 1860's, Ida's grandfather, William Hall Dukes, who had emigrated from the Missouri Ozarks to work the mines of Placer County, decided to settle in Contra Costa County. He located his ranch near Grayson Creek and Reliez Valley Road, in the area of what is now called Mohawk drive.

"Later, he married Lucy Kinzer Boss, and reared one boy and five girls. The son was Sherard Leonidas Dukes who followed in his father's footsteps, became a solid rancher, and married Ida Symonds. They had a son, William, and three daughters, Hazel, Ella, and Ida, all born on the ranch. Ida is the subject of our sketch, who later married William Kutz.

"Ida tells about her early days on the Dukes Ranch, when her father was known (as a) successful orchardist. (Her) mother raised chickens and graded the eggs. In addition, they had a fine kitchen-garden with a large assortment of vegetables. Her father had his own blacksmith shop to repair farm equipment. She says that he made frequent trips to Muir Station near Martinez and (to) Oakland to sell his hay and produce, and he used to tell of having to cross many creeks on the way.

"Ida first went to Pleasant Hill Grammar School in a wooden school house near Oak Park Road and Pleasant Hill Road. She attended first-grade under Miss Charlotte Boyd (later Mrs. Ballenger). She was considered a very fine teacher. She lives in Concord, and is still active in preserving the history of the surrounding areas.

"Ida told us that Sunday School was held in the older school built prior to 1900. In the old days, she says that they had yearly picnics at Marsh Creek, Mitchell's Canyon, and Pine Canyon (now Castle Rock Park). They rode ponies, Prince and Bessie, to school. But in bad weather, they were taken by horse and buggy over the muddy roads.

"Among her many interests, Ida is fascinated with the history of the West. An active member of the Pleasant Hill Historical Society, she has designed some very fine pen and ink drawings for the Society stationary, and has served as membership chairman.

"It is noteworthy that her father and mother celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1944, with a host of relatives and friends. The true story of Ida's forebears is intensely interesting and easily form the basis for a book.

"As a person, Ida can be well described as a gracious lady; friendly, kind and understanding." [Ed files]

Ida L. Dukes Kutz suffers from high blood pressure, and had a stroke.

Notes for M
ABLE LEONORA HOLLIDAY:
Information on Mabel Pracy -- "Gogi," "Aunt Mabel" -- was obtained from Katherine Honegger, Ed Kutz, and Beverly Jane Pracy Hosman, who sent a letter to the cousins upon Mabel's death in 1994.

Her notes include information that Mabel was born 21 June 1891, and had two younger sisters, Ruth and Myra, and a younger brother who died as a toddler. Her mother died when she was 6 years old, and she grew up on a ranch with her father, two sisters, and her grandfather.

In due time, she met George Prace and married him 4 Jun 1913, after which they moved to San Francisco, where they lived the 58 years of their marriage. (Note that Ed Kutz shows the couple married in San Francisco. I previously had Martinez, California.)

Her interests were many--art and home decorating, horseback riding, Girl Scout work, and gardening. She was a flower arranger of great skill, winning many awards for the San Francisco Garden Club, and a hostess "par excellence." Her parties were a joy and delight for all of her many friends.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, May 26, 1994 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Los Banos, California. A later service was planned for incryptment at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael, California.

Mable died peacefully in her sleep, just a month short of her 103rd birthday and was "reasonably alert" until the very end.
