Notes for H
ENRY GROUNDS:
Henry and Mary Jane McCoy Grounds, with their smallest children, traveled overland via wagon through and Eastern Kansas community now known as Thayer. They came to a small German homestead where a Kate Bender, her parents and other relatives had migrated from Germany, planted a new fruit orchard and offered it and supplies to travelers passing en route to new homes.

The Grounds had an ill feeling about the place (premonition), and rejected the offer to stay overnight. They watered their horses and cattle and traveled several miles and camped on a stream bank. Later, after they reached Cloverdale, Kansas, the heard that the Bender's place had been under suspicion for some time, and that many travelers had passed through there and never seen or heard from again. A raiding part of local vigilantes proceeded to the Bender's to search and soon found a great number of buried bodies in the orchard. They also heard first that the Benders had disappeared, then that they had been caught and hung on the spot by vigilantes.

The family went to Independence, Kansas, then to the Cloverdale area where coal slopes were operating and where Henry and the two boys hired on and mined soft coal for use by the railroad and by residents. The children arriving there were Robert and Albert. Born later was Clara, then Luella, then Ada and "Hazel" who disliked the name, Mahalia.

Vera Miller writes 23 Jan 1999 that she has found a land patent where Henry Grounds bought 160 acres of land in Chautauqua County, Kansas, in May 1881.

After Henry Grounds died of pneumonia, Mary Jane married a Jones, and had Frankie, who at age 12 was visiting his brother Albert and wife at Cedarvale, and started home to Cloverdale with his two dogs. He was found en route frozen to death.

A daughter age 7 or 8 came too close to the wood stove in her home and her gown caught fire, burning her to death.

Jones left Mary Jane, taking all her stock and cash. With no "relief" in those days, she was destitute. Friends and relatives aided her.

"Forrest Grounds' Family Story" from the "Cedar Vale Messenger," Cedar Vale, Kansas, 18 Apr 1985

"Harrison and Mary Ann Grounds and five children came to Leeds by covered wagon from Albion, Ill., in 1881. They settled on a farm that was just south of Leeds. The little town of Leeds had a store, church and blacksmith shop. Nothing remains now of this little town to show it ever existed there.

"The five children to come from Illinois were Elizabeth, Ida, Joseph, Aaron, and John W. (father of Charley and Forrest). Three more children born at Leeds were Ethel, Lillie, and Ruth.

"John W. and his sisters went to Ebinezer School one mile north of Leeds, and Shilo two miles west. John W. left home as soon as he was old enough to earn wages and worked as a Cowboy for Stonebreaker and Zoy in the early 1880s until 1911. He drove a lot of cattle into Elgin, as it was the only shipping yard where they could send Oklahoma cattle to market in Kansas. Stonebreaker headquarters were just south of Blue Mound which is south of Cedar Vale six or seven miles.

"John W. was born Dec. 14, 1877 and his wife Lynnie Cable on Apr. 4, 1886 near Cedar Vale. They were married Oct. 14, 1908, and lived on a little farm south of Cedar Vale where two sons were born, Forrest on June 12, 1911, and Charley on Sept. 18, 1913.

"In the spring of 1917 the Grounds family moved to a farm two and one half miles east of the little village of Cloverdale. It had a general store, cream and egg station, church, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and five or six housees.

"In the wintertime literary programs were held in the schoolhouse. John W. managed a baseball team for years during the summertime. Today, all that is left of the Cloverdale village is the schoolhouse and one dwelling.

"The Grounds family lived in the hardpan school district and that is where Forrest and Charley went. Lynnie Grounds organized a club that met every two weeks and it was active for years.

"In 1939 the Cloverdale farm was sold and John purchased a farm two miles north of Cedar Vale where the family lived until the spring of 1978. John died June 9, 1943 at the age of 64. Lynnie lived on the farm until her death Sept. 29, 1959 when she was 73. Both are buried in Cedar Vale.

"Charlie Grounds farmed until he went into the Army in Jan. 1941. He served in England, Africa, Sicily and Italy, and returned home in 1945. He worked for Cable's International Harvester Co., and later Ford Co. After a serious injury to his left arm he had to quit doing mechanical work and drove a school bus. He was also a substitute mail carrier and worked in the school shop. Charley had a heart attack and died carrying the mail Feb. 13, 1982 at the age of 68. He is buried in Cedar Vale.

"Forrest Grounds farmed all his life except for the two years spent in the army. He was stationed in Alaska and returned home in 1944. He lived on the farm until the spring of 1978 when he moved to Cedar Vale. He is now retired and takes care of his place and has a few hobbies he enjoys.

"Forrest is the last of his family with the Grounds name."
