"Mamie Edna Ground, born July 12, 1890 at our 'home place,' Three Forks, Warren County, Kentucky, died November 4, 1984 in Knoxville, Tennessee. We are all saddened by her death. Mamie did more to pull our family together with her years of research, thousands of letters to all parts of the world and gentle encouragement to those who followed her, than anyone I know. I sit looking at a faded photograph of Mamie, taken at Camp Pike, Arkansas in 1918, 'Mamie G. Hays, Army Nurse.' I realize that even though I never met her, I will miss her. First, she represents one of the last living contacts I have with my grandmother, Roberta. Second, she represents the beginning of the now massive amount of research done in the family. Third, she came from a disappearing generation which suffered much, complained little, and made our world as it is. She saw the first telephone, first automobile, first airplanes, and countless other 'firsts' in the world. She is the bit of lace you've saved in the cedar chest for years, the yellow faded photo, the grandmother you miss. She is gone from us, but she will live forever in our hearts."

Letter from Edna Ruth Ground Lemmon to Anna Moulder Grinstead:

"On this dark, rainy day, May 19th 1981, I'm going to tell you about the romance of Mom (Maggie Moulder) and Dad (Edgar Robert Ground). As you know they had always lived on adjoining farms, so it wasn't far across the field for Dad to go courting. But listen to this, if he wasn't back home by 8:00 at night, Granny (Eliza Barsheba Beckham Ground) went after him and said if V. Moulder couldn't send him home at bedtime, she would go get him and I don't imagine my dad took too kindly to that. Do you?

"I guess the most exciting thing that happened during this courtship was when dad got his finger cut off in a corn shredder on the Edd Beck farm at Smiths Grove, Pleas Ground, dad's cousin, the bearer of all news, both good and bad came to tell her and she couldn't believe it. Walter Parker came to see him, at the sight of the mangled hand and all the blood he fainted.

"The week before they got married Mom went to visit Uncle Jeems and Aunt Daisy Underhill in Bowling Green, Ky. From there they boarded a train in Bowling Green and went to Gallatin, Tenn. in Sumner County and were married in the court house there by a Justice of Peace. Dad lost the marriage liscense (sic) and Mom never did see it till a couple of years ago Clifford sent for a copy and sure enough they were legally married as I had thought all along. Mom was a child bride -- 15 yrs, 2 mo. and 6 days old. Dad was 20 yrs., 8 months and 10 days old. She had a beautiful blue satin wedding dress made by her cousin, Lattie Brunson Robinson; she said dad nevr liked it because it was a "hobble skirt" and you could only take one step at a time and he was never one to poke around. They got the train in Gallatin and came to Scottsville, Ky. to Uncle Tom and Aunt Ethel Jackson's (Ethel was E. R. Ground's sister) for their honeymoon. Mom said she never was as homesick in her life; I guess she thought she was a long ways from home, about 20 mil. and a half hour drive nowadays. Granny and Aunt Mamie were there and I bet Aunt Ethel had a mighty good supper for them.

"Uncle Tom hired a double rigged hack at the livery stable to bring them home along with Granny and Aunt Mamie and I know Uncle Tom was glad to bring thm for grandma had a big wedding supper for them. I dont' know who all was there but I know Uncle Franks' were because Daisy Moulder Phillips has told me many times what a 'good slapping' Aunt Bessie gave her because she wouldn't sit still for her to comb her hair before they went.

"They went to live with Granny in the old log house and about two years later I came along and was born in the 'old log house' from there on you have the rest..."

Howard E. Grounds (his grandson) gives his name as Pleasent Ground, although other records spell it as Pleasant.

Notes for VADIE HOWELL:
"Vada Howell Ground's mother was married more than once. She was a Smith when I knew her. We always called her Mammy Smith. I remembre she had a large goiter. Vada had a brother that I know of named Newt."
