ALTER JEWELL LAWRENCE:
A story provided by Nellie Grabs that may relate to this Walter Lawrence. Sent to me in 1984. Caption: "By Victor Moulder, Anna Moulder Grinstead Uncle"

Of course, I knew John and Emma Lawrence well. Their children were school mates of mine, and I remember the incident of the mad dog biting my sister Daisy and Walter Lawrence. Walter Lawrence was a small boy. There was a wheat thrashing in the neighborhood that day. All the men folks were there. Sister Daisy was sweeping off the yard and fought the dog off with her broom. She was wounded only slightly. Walter was out in the road a half mile away watching for his Father to come in for dinner. He saw the dog coming and ran. There was a split rail fence between him and the house. He climbed to the top. The dog seized him by the hip and jerked him back to the ground and bit him in a dozen places before his mother rescued him. He was badly cut on his hip.

That evening John, Emma and I took Daisy and Walter in a spring wagon to Uncle Ed Edmonds near Beckton to have the wounds treated with the mad stone. I had but little faith in the stone. But I watched Mr. Edmonds method of treatment carefully. He first submerged the stone in sweet milk then applied it to the large wound on Walter's hip. The stone clung to the wound for perhaps two minutes then dropped off. Mr. Edmonds had another pan of fresh sweet milk brought and the stone was submerged in it. To my astonishment a green scum like vertigris arose to the surface of the milk. Mr. Edmonds declared the green scum was poison the stone had sucked from the wound.

The stone was applied to Walter's wound seventeen times, the lasta time, no coloring whatevre rising on the milk. Sister Daisy was treated the same way. We were there two days and nights, then went home. One week later, Mr. Edmonds came down and reapplied the stone and pronounced them cured. Strange to say, the cuts healed without making a sore or other treatment. That the dog was mad there was no doubt. It bit a hog for George P. Washer. The pig went mad. The dog was killed and so were all the rest of the dogs in the neighborhood.

THEL SHERIMMERHORN:
Sue Lynn Stone gives this wife's last name as Julian, but Wes Mullenneix gave it as Schermerhorn. It may be that there was another marriage for Ethel before she married Vadie Howell Ground.

Susie Wright wrote in September 2000 with the correct spelling of her maiden name -- Sherimmerhorn -- and said that "Judy" told her the spelling and also that her first husband's last name was Julian. Aubrey Ground raised the three Julian children as if they were his own.
